The artists on our team have been making larger-than-life visual effects for film and television for 10 years, bringing their rich and diverse experience from Montreal, Toronto, Bogotá, Saguenay, Mumbai and now in London.\n We are looking for a Senior Software Developer to design and build tools and systems that support our visual effects production pipeline.\nWorking closely with developers, technical directors, and artists, you will translate production needs into reliable, maintainable software that improves workflows and helps teams deliver their best work. You will contribute to technical architecture, take ownership of development projects, and help strengthen engineering practices through collaboration, code reviews, and mentoring.\nThis role combines hands-on development with technical leadership and a practical approach to solving complex production challenges.\nWorking hours: This position requires working Montreal business hours (Eastern Time), including seasonal daylight-saving time changes.\n Develop pipeline tools and systems: Design, build, and maintain software that streamlines workflows, automates tasks, and connects applications across the VFX production pipeline.\nShape software architecture: Design scalable, maintainable solutions using appropriate design patterns and sound engineering principles, balancing long-term needs with production priorities.\nMaintain software quality: Write clear, well-tested code, participate in peer reviews, and promote consistent coding standards, automated testing, and Test-Driven Development where appropriate.\nCollaborate with production teams: Work with production, finance, HR, and other stakeholders to understand requirements, identify workflow improvements, and deliver practical solutions.\nOwn delivery: Break down technical work, estimate effort, identify dependencies and risks, and communicate progress to support planning and prioritization.\nTroubleshoot and improve: Investigate software and integration issues, resolve underlying causes, and improve system reliability and performance.\nMentor and share knowledge: Support other developers through technical guidance, constructive feedback, and knowledge sharing.\nDocument solutions: Maintain clear technical documentation to support adoption, ongoing maintenance, and continuity across the team.\n Demonstrated experience designing, developing, and maintaining complex software systems, with the ability to lead technical decisions and deliver solutions independently.\nStrong proficiency in Python and C++, with experience developing and maintaining production software.\nStrong understanding of software architecture, object-oriented design, design patterns, and SOLID principles, with the judgment to apply them appropriately.\nExperience with automated testing, including unit and integration tests, and familiarity with Test-Driven Development.\nExperience with Git and collaborative development workflows, including code reviews.\nAbility to translate complex requirements into practical, maintainable technical solutions.\nStrong analytical and troubleshooting skills, with attention to reliability, performance, and usability.\nClear communication skills and the ability to collaborate with technical and creative teams.\nExperience mentoring developers and taking ownership of technical projects.\nA degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.Additional Assets\n\nExperience in VFX, animation, or a related production environment.\nExperience in developing tools and integrations for Payroll, HRIS and Financial Services.\nFamiliarity with Clean Architecture, CQRS, or other architectural approaches.\nExperience with cloud services supporting production pipelines.\nFamiliarity with Agile development practices and project tracking tools such as Jira or Asana.\nNeed Accommodation?\nWe are committed to providing an inclusive and accessible recruitment experience.\nPrivacy Notice\nYour personal information will be collected, used, and stored for recruitment purposes in accordance with applicable privacy laws.\nPitch Black is an Equal Opportunity Employer\nAt Pitch Black, we celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive workplace where everyone can thrive.
