We are a spin-off of the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics, based in Garching near Munich. Our software team owns the stack that turns a quantum program into the laser pulses and atom movements our machines execute. As a Senior / Lead Quantum Compiler & ISA Engineer, you will lead how programs reach our neutral-atom hardware: the compiler architecture, its intermediate representations, and the instruction set at every level from gates to pulses and atom movement. Depending on experience, the role can grow into technical lead for compilation.\nYou work between physicists, software developers, control-system engineers, and our algorithm and quantum error correction (QEC) teams. You own the interfaces between them: which operations the hardware exposes, how programs are lowered onto them, and how people can see what the compiler did.\nYour responsibilities\nCompiler infrastructureYou work on the architecture of a multi-level compiler, with dialects from logical circuits through native gates, atom layouts down to the shuttling level.\nDesign analysis and optimization passes driven by hardware cost models such as fidelity, timing and atom-loss budgets.\nKeep the stack interoperable with standards such as OpenQASM 3 and QIR.\n Instruction set architecture (ISA)Define the instruction set at each abstraction level, from the gate set users target down to timed pulse and movement instructions.\nOwn the interface to the control system: what the compiler hands over, which timing guarantees hold, and which constraints it must respect.\nDecide with physicists and control engineers which operations each level exposes, and how the ISA is versioned as software and hardware evolves.\nToolingBuild tools that make compilation visible: IR dumps between passes, pass diffing, visualizations of atom positions and schedules, and replay of failed jobs.\nAdd verifiers, property-based tests and equivalence checks so that every pass can be trusted.\nBuild tools for our algorithm and QEC teams, such as resource estimation to provide fast feedback on how a circuit maps to the machine and be involved in shaping the next generation of compilers for our error corrected quantum computers.\nTechnical leadershipMake and document architecture decisions for the compiler and ISA.\nReview designs and code across the team.\nRepresent compilation in hardware co-design discussions and, where it fits, in open-source and standards communities.\nWhat you bring\nA PhD or MSc in computer science, physics or a related field, or equivalent industry experience.\n3+ years building compilers, IR-based tools or language toolchains, in industry or research.\nDeep hands-on experience with MLIR or xDSL, or with LLVM or a comparable SSA-based infrastructure.\nA track record of setting the architecture of a compiler or toolchain and taking it to production.\nDeep Knowledge and Understanding of Python\nComfort reasoning about hardware: instruction sets, timing, scheduling, and resource constraints.\nInterest in quantum computing and in working closely with physicists. Prior quantum experience is not required.\nNice to have\nOther programming languages like C++ or Rust.\nQuantum compilation tools such as Qiskit, Qrisp, tket, Cirq, CUDA-Q, Catalyst or Kirin/Bloqade.\nQuantum error correction, stabilizer simulation (e.g. Stim), or logical-level compilation.\nExperience around GPUs and Optimization.\nOpen-source contributions or private projects.\nWhy join planqc\nReal ownership: you shape the compiler and ISA of machines being built now, with room to grow into a lead role.\nDaily contact with the lab: your passes run on real neutral-atom hardware.\nA interdisciplinary team of physicists, engineers and computer scientists.\nCompetitive salary.\nBenefits at planqc\n Flexible working: Flexible hours and hybrid work where the role allows.\nCompany pension: Betriebliche Altersvorsorge with an employer contribution.\nHealth and fitness: EGYM Wellpass for gyms, pools and studios, plus regular Health Days.\nJob bike: Lease a bike through planqc.\nLearning and development: Trainings and conference participation, including international conferences. Plus regular internal learning sessions where colleagues share their knowledge.\nRelocation and visa support: Practical support for international hires and their move to Germany or Austria.\nFour locations: Headquarters in Garching, an office in central Munich, plus sites in Ulm and Innsbruck.\nTeam culture: Regular team and company events throughout the year, from after work socials to our summer and Christmas parties.","description_format":"text","description_chars":4637,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":null,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":{"level":"master","optional":true},"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":["Company events","Flexible schedule","Hybrid work"],"hiring_locations":[{"name":"Germany","iso":"DE","kind":"country"}],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":true,"industries":["Quantum Science & Computing","Quantum Computing Hardware","High-Performance Computing"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-10-29T09:39:07Z"}],"visa":[],"liveness":{"score":86,"band":"hot","label":"Hiring now","p_open":1,"p_active":0.86,"p_room":1,"age_days":10,"expected_fill_days":75,"reasons":["conf:3","win:early"],"computed_at":"2026-11-02T06:13:15Z"},"pay":null,"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/planqc-quantum-compiler-engineer","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/planqc-quantum-compiler-engineer.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-11-02T19:32:42Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"crawler_verified","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":27405,"day_limit":null,"remaining_today":null,"minute_limit":300,"resets_at":"2026-11-03T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":9437},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=9437"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Fplanqc-quantum-compiler-engineer"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Fplanqc-quantum-compiler-engineer"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Fplanqc-quantum-compiler-engineer"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/planqc-quantum-compiler-engineer\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Fplanqc-quantum-compiler-engineer"}],"agent":{"mcp":"https://alion.io/mcp/jobs","mcp_open":"https://alion.io/mcp/open","next":[{"tool":"get_job","arguments":{"id":3448264}},{"tool":"search_jobs","arguments":{"company":"planqc.eu","detail":"compact"}},{"tool":"match_people","arguments":{"job_id":3448264},"note":"people open to offers who fit this vacancy"}],"note":"The same data through MCP tools: https://alion.io/mcp/open needs no sign-in (compact searches, postings, people); https://alion.io/mcp with an Alion account has everything.
