This goes beyond a traditional external API: you'll design and deliver the full stack of surfaces that enable developers, partners, and AI agents to integrate with us — REST APIs, MCP servers, skills, webhooks, and the developer experience layer that ties it all together.\nThis is a high-visibility, high-ownership role at the intersection of platform engineering and the emerging ecosystem of AI-powered builders.\nOur stack: Ruby on Rails (backend), React + TypeScript (frontend), GraphQL and REST APIs, MySQL / Redis / Sidekiq, cloud-native infrastructure on AWS.\nWhat You'll Do\nDesign and build Playbypoint's external API — versioned, stable, and built to scale with a growing ecosystem of integrators and partners.\n\nDevelop and maintain MCP servers and skills that expose Playbypoint capabilities to AI agents and developer tools.\n\nOwn the developer experience end to end: API documentation, developer portal, onboarding flows, SDKs, and sandbox environments.\n\nDefine API governance practices: versioning strategy, deprecation policies, backward compatibility, and breaking change management.\n\nBuild the infrastructure that makes our external surfaces observable and reliable — rate limiting, auth, throttling, usage analytics.\n\nPartner with product and internal engineering teams to expose platform capabilities through well-designed, consistent integration contracts.\n\nTrack and shape how the ecosystem of builders — human and AI — integrates with Playbypoint.\n\nYou Might Thrive in This Role If You\nHave 7+ years of software engineering experience, with significant focus on API design, platform development, or developer tooling.\n\nAre comfortable across the full stack — backend API design and frontend developer portal/documentation surfaces.\n\nHave designed and shipped public or partner-facing APIs at scale — versioning, auth models, rate limiting, and the full lifecycle of an external API are familiar territory.\n\nHave hands-on experience building for AI-era integration surfaces — MCP servers, agent skills, LLM tool definitions, or similar patterns.\n\nCare deeply about developer experience: you've built or contributed to developer portals, SDKs, or documentation systems that builders actually love.\n\nUnderstand the difference between an internal API and an external one — backward compatibility, contract stability, and the cost of breaking changes are not abstract concepts.\n\nAre comfortable working across teams to define integration contracts that balance internal velocity with external stability.\n\nCommunicate clearly and default to async. Strong written and spoken English is a must — we work closely with US-based stakeholders and partners, and our developer-facing surfaces are products in themselves.\n\nEngineering in the AI EraWe expect every engineer at Playbypoint to work with AI as a core part of their craft — not as a novelty, but as a force multiplier across the entire SDLC.
