ABOUT POMONA COLLEGE: Located near Los Angeles, California, Pomona College is widely regarded as one of the nation's premier liberal arts colleges. JOB PURPOSE: Pomona College seeks a dynamic professional staff member who is eager to develop their knowledge in the field of admissions and enthusiastic to contribute to the operations of a highly collegial and driven admissions team during reading season. The Temporary Admissions officer plays a key role in the evaluation and selection of domestic applicants for the College’s entering first-year and transfer classes, as well as the summer high school program PAYS (Pomona College Academy for Youth Success). This position will assist with admissions programming on campus and may also be asked to conduct local recruitment travel on behalf of the College.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Reporting directly to the Senior Associate Dean of Admissions & Director of Operations, the Temporary Admissions Officer performs the following essential duties and responsibilities:

1. Read, evaluate and rate applicant admission materials to make appropriate recommendations to the Admissions Selection Committee and meet the College’s annual enrollment goals.

a. Holistically review first-year and transfer applications using the Pomona College Office of Admissions criteria.

b. Evaluate academic records across curricula and contexts.

c. Assess non-academic components within geographic and educational context.

d. Prepare concise written evaluations and present cases in committee.

e. Apply policies consistently, meet deadlines, and uphold confidentiality.

2. Holistically review ninth grade applications for the Pomona College Academy for Youth Success (PAYS) summer program.

3. Support campus-based programs throughout the contract term.

a. Assist with planning and programming for Transfer Open House.

b. Assist with planning and programming for Admitted Students Day.

c. Provide support for daily visit operations for the Office of Admissions, which may include greeting visitors, presenting information sessions, and answering questions as the Officer of the Day (OD).

4. Provide input and feedback on the functioning of admissions programs and initiatives through regular staff meetings and staff development days.

5. Co-manage the Slate Inbox with a group of colleagues to distribute admissions inquiry emails to the correct person(s) in the Admissions Office.

6. Coordinate special projects/tasks and provide assistance as assigned, which may include local travel within Southern California.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

  • Licenses/Certificates: A valid driver’s license is required or equivalent means of reliable transportation to off-site meetings and events.

  • Experience: A minimum of 1 year of experience working with high school students and counselors is preferred, but not required. The ability to speak a language other than English is also preferred, but not required. Experience at a liberal arts and sciences college is preferred.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND CRITICAL SKILLS: This successful candidate must possess the knowledge, skills and abilities to be able to perform the essential functions of the position or be able to demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed. The incumbent must be able to:

1. Deploy professional skills in recruiting, and advising students, families, and counselors, in collaboration with colleagues to best promote the College’s strategic interests.

a. Manage application details to help prospective and newly enrolling students.

b. Demonstrate effectiveness and clarity of verbal and written communication with excellent interpersonal communication. Must handle all activities and highly confidential information with patience, discretion, tact, and a keen eye for detail while working with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.

c. Must respond to e-mails and phone calls in a timely manner.

2. Operate computers with basic Microsoft Office software (such as Word, Excel, Outlook) and associated professional software (such as Slate and menu-driven databases). Demonstrate understanding of the use of technology to achieve annual goals and maintain confidentiality.

3. Manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and work both independently and as a collaborative member of the College in support of the College’s strategic vision and the division’s annual goals with a high standard of integrity and ethics.

4. Display exceptional organizational, time management and reading skills to complete work with accuracy and attention to detail.

5. Manage ambiguity, collaborate with peers on long-term projects and engage diverse audiences of students, counselors, parents and College alumni with ease.

REQUIRED HOURS: The regular hours for this full-time position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday - Friday. Holiday, weekend and evening work hours will be required. Regular hours may vary due to needs of the College or division.

ADDITIONAL POSITION DETAILS: This position is a temporary, full-time, exempt position. Annual Salary for this position is $70,304 with a competitive benefits package. The specific factors that the College will consider when offering a salary to an individual will include, but not be limited to: education, training, relevant prior experience, and performance in prior roles. All staff positions are ineligible for visa or permanent resident card sponsorship. As a California employer, Pomona College requires all employees to be residents of California.
