Site Protection Sprinkler Mechanic
Overview
The Site Protection team is looking for a Sprinkler Mechanic with excellent working knowledge of the Fire Protection trade, and will perform tests of Fire Protection Systems in accordance with the National Fire Protection Association Codes. The Sprinkler Mechanic will make repairs and/or modifications to Fire Protection Systems with limited supervision, following all University safety rules and regulations at all times.
Responsibilities
- Perform required testing on Fire Protection Systems. Fire protection systems include wet and dry sprinkler systems, pre-action and deluge systems, standpipes and fire pumps. Tests are performed in accordance with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes. Coordinates with the Site Safety Coordinator, Public Safety Department, Fire Marshall and building occupants when isolating systems for testing or repair purposes. Prepares complete inspection records in proper format.
- Repairs, modifies and installs various types of fire protection systems according to NFPA codes (wet, dry, pre-action, etc.). Plans the work, identifies and orders the required materials.
- Acquires and maintains a good knowledge of the NFPA Codes involving water-based fire protection systems such as NFPA 13, 14, 20, and 25.
- Reviews drawings of fire protection systems to gather needed information.
- Troubleshoots and analyzes mechanical and electrical problems in the fire protection sprinkler systems.
- Other duties as assigned.

- Ability to effectively perform the essential duties as outlined in this job description.
- Must be capable of performing inspections of the fire protection sprinkler systems and fire pumps in accordance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes. Must be capable of performing all required coordination efforts and performing the required record keeping.
- Possess significant experience in the sprinkler fitting trade. Must have technical knowledge of the repair, modification and installation of wet and dry sprinkler piping systems and pre- action systems. Must have the ability to repair and maintain fire protection systems with limited guidance.
- Must have an excellent working knowledge of the NFPA codes involving water-based fire protection systems such as NFPA 13, 14, 20, and 25. Must have working knowledge of the New Jersey fire code (IFC 2006-NJ) with the ability to determine code requirements relative to the university's fire and life safety systems.
- Must have the ability to understand drawings and service manuals for equipment serviced.
- Must have a good ability to work in a team environment.
- After-Hour Emergency Response-Must be able to respond to after normal business hour emergencies and incidents as needed, and on short notice.
- Essential Personnel-must be able to function in an essential personnel role, which may include an extended on-campus presence, as defined in the University’s (Core Essential Policy).
- Must have a valid driver's license.
- Must be skilled in safe and effective work practices and the proper use of trade tools.
Education:
- High school diploma or four years of vocational school or equivalent; pertinent knowledge in the mechanical field

- Must be capable of working off step ladders, extension ladders and man lifts to heights reaching 50 feet above the ground; and
- Will be required to work on and around live electrical equipment, AC and Will also be required to work on and around rotating machinery and other mechanical systems.
