Backed by over €650M and powered by a growing team across Munich, Zurich, and Oxford, we are developing the hardware and infrastructure needed to deliver the world’s first commercial stellarator fusion power plant.\nOur concept advances the most mature fusion technology out there, the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator, through two next-generation machines: Alpha and Stellaris. Our work combines stellarator optimization, advanced computation, machine learning, and high-temperature superconducting magnets to unlock higher-performance designs that were previously out of reach.\nTurning these designs into a functioning fusion power plant requires excellence and ownership across every discipline, from physics and engineering to software, manufacturing, law, and business functions.\nTEAM AND ROLE\nShape the architecture of the world’s first commercial fusion power plant - Own system-level decisions that determine how a first-of-a-kind energy technology is designed, integrated, and ultimately deployed at scale.\n\nSolve some of the most complex engineering challenges in industry - Work across tightly coupled disciplines (plasma physics, magnets, cryogenics, manufacturing, controls, and more) to resolve critical trade-offs and turn cutting-edge science into a functioning product.\n\nBuild real hardware with a pragmatic, fast-moving team from all over the world - Combine advanced simulation and systems thinking with a strong execution mindset, focusing on practical engineering solutions that accelerate the path to commercial fusion energy.\n\nWHY JOIN PROXIMA FUSION\nYou will get to work on some of the most complex tech challenges to bring abundant, safe, clean energy to the world.\n\nYou'll get to join and learn from an exceptional selection of accomplished and driven individuals.\n\nDo your life’s best work and enjoy the journey.\n\nGet to show that big things are possible in Europe when you assemble the best talent.\n\nYOUR IMPACT\nAs a Senior Computational Physicist - Stellarator Optimization, you will design the magnetic fields and coils at the core of our stellarators. You will balance plasma performance with engineering requirements, prioritizing simple, practical designs that can be built. Your work will directly shape Stellaris, our first commercial fusion power plant.\nWHAT YOU WILL DO\nYou will shape the “heart” of the stellarator: the magnetic field that confines the plasma and the coils that create it.\nRelease optimized plasma and coil geometries that engineering teams use to design magnets, supporting structures, and surrounding sub-systems.\n\nResolve design trade-offs between physics, engineering and assembly requirements.\n\nOwn research projects that overcome technical challenges. Choose questions by their impact to the stellarator and carry the answers through to engineering decisions.\n\nDeliver results in time for design milestones, with clear recommendations, checked assumptions, and uncertainties that engineers can work with.\nWHO YOU ARE\n\nYou have strong mathematical reasoning and experience solving difficult computational problems. You can work from first principles and choose methods that fit the question.\n\nYou have independently driven research to useful outcomes, in academia or industry. You can frame an ambiguous problem, set priorities, and deliver without waiting for detailed instructions.\n\nYou understand that designs need to meet requirements and deadlines. You know when to investigate further and when to commit to a validated solution.\n\nYou write clear, reliable scientific code. You are comfortable with Python, or can become productive in it quickly, and use testing, version control, and code review.\n\nYou have a master’s degree in a STEM field, or equivalent experience. We welcome physicists, mathematicians, engineers, computer scientists, and researchers from other quantitative backgrounds. A PhD is not required.\n\nPrior fusion, tokamak, or stellarator experience is not required. You bring the computational attitude and willingness to learn the physics.\n\nINTERVIEW PROCESS\nRecruiter Interview (30-60 min)\n\nTechnical Screening (30 min)\n\nTechnical Panel (3x60 min)\n\nAt Proxima Fusion, our mission is bold: making limitless clean energy a reality. To get there, we need a high-performing, diverse team that brings different perspectives, challenges assumptions, and builds together with purpose. We know that diversity of thought and experience leads to better ideas, stronger execution, and a more resilient team. We don’t look at how you identify, what you look like, who you choose to worship or what ethnicity you are. We care about what you can bring to the table.","description_format":"text","description_chars":4831,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":null,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":{"level":"master","optional":false},"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":[],"hiring_locations":[],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["Nuclear Energy"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-10-28T12:40:17Z"}],"visa":[],"liveness":{"score":63,"band":"ok","label":"Likely open","p_open":1,"p_active":0.632,"p_room":1,"age_days":0,"expected_fill_days":86,"reasons":["conf:0","stale_co","velocity","win:early"],"computed_at":"2026-10-29T05:49:05Z"},"pay":null,"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/proxima-fusion-senior-computational-physicist-stellarator-optimization","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/proxima-fusion-senior-computational-physicist-stellarator-optimization.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-29T21:16:30Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"crawler_verified","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":31499,"day_limit":null,"remaining_today":null,"minute_limit":300,"resets_at":"2026-10-30T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":8931},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=8931"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Fproxima-fusion-senior-computational-physicist-stellarator-optimization"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Fproxima-fusion-senior-computational-physicist-stellarator-optimization"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Fproxima-fusion-senior-computational-physicist-stellarator-optimization"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/proxima-fusion-senior-computational-physicist-stellarator-optimization\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Fproxima-fusion-senior-computational-physicist-stellarator-optimization"}],"agent":{"mcp":"https://alion.io/mcp/jobs","mcp_open":"https://alion.io/mcp/open","next":[{"tool":"get_job","arguments":{"id":3396433}},{"tool":"search_jobs","arguments":{"company":"proximafusion.com","detail":"compact"}},{"tool":"match_people","arguments":{"job_id":3396433},"note":"people open to offers who fit this vacancy"}],"note":"The same data through MCP tools: https://alion.io/mcp/open needs no sign-in (compact searches, postings, people); https://alion.io/mcp with an Alion account has everything.
