The company develops quantum timing, quantum-secure communications, and quantum computing platforms engineered for the performance, reliability, and environmental resilience that mission-critical applications demand - systems designed to be deployed, maintained, and trusted by operators who cannot afford ambiguity about whether the technology works.\nThe long-term vision is deeper than any single platform. Q-Block is pursuing a mission to decode Nature's foundational model - to build instruments of sufficient precision and coherence that they become tools for understanding the physical universe at its most fundamental level. Commercialization and science reinforce each other by design.\nAbout this role: The Optomechanical Design Engineer will own the mechanical and optomechanical design of Q-Block's quantum hardware platforms, carrying systems from laboratory prototype through to fieldable, environmentally hardened product. The work spans precision optical mount design, enclosure packaging, thermal management, vibration and shock assessment, tolerance analysis, and the manufacturing coordination that turns a design into a delivered article.\nThe successful candidate is a mechanical engineer who thinks at the sub-micron level when the optics demand it and at the field-deployment level when the environment demands it, and knows how to hold both pictures in mind at once. They are equally at home in CAD, in a simulation environment, and on the shop floor reviewing a first article with a machinist. The role collaborates closely with the Optical Engineer, the electronics team, and the firmware team, and is responsible for the physical embodiment of systems that need to work - not just demonstrate - under real operational conditions.\nResponsibilities\nDesign precision optomechanical mounts, flexure assemblies, lens housings, and beam path structures that maintain sub-micron and sub-millirad alignment stability under thermal and vibration loads.\nDesign enclosures and packaging for quantum hardware modules, balancing optical access, thermal dissipation, electromagnetic shielding, weight, and serviceability.\nDevelop 3D CAD models and assembly layouts of complete hardware modules integrating optical, electronic, and mechanical subsystems in SolidWorks, Inventor, or equivalent.\nConduct thermal analysis (conduction, convection, radiation) of enclosed optical-electronic assemblies using ANSYS, COMSOL, SolidWorks Thermal, or equivalent; design thermal management solutions including heat sinks, TEC interfaces, and airflow paths.\nPerform tolerance stack-up analysis for optical assemblies; ensure alignment budgets are achievable given manufacturing tolerances, thermal drift, and vibration inputs.\nAssess mechanical designs against environmental qualification requirements (MIL-STD-810 shock, vibration, temperature; MIL-STD-461 EMC shielding) and recommend design modifications to meet defence-grade standards.\nGenerate manufacturing-ready drawings with complete GD&T, material specifications, surface finish callouts, and assembly instructions.\nCoordinate with CNC machinists, sheet metal fabricators, and external manufacturing vendors on DFM reviews, first-article inspection, and production support.\nSupport optical assembly and integration activities; design alignment fixtures, handling tools, and assembly jigs that enable repeatable assembly by technicians.\nCollaborate with the Systems Engineer on interface control documents and mechanical interface definitions.\nManage a structured CAD library with revision control, BOM management, and controlled drawing release processes.\nCollaborate across optics, electronics, firmware, and systems teams; contribute to a culture of rigorous engineering practice and honest technical discussion.\nRequired qualifications\nBachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Engineering Physics, or a closely related field.\n4+ years of professional experience in mechanical design, with at least 2 years involving optomechanical system design, precision instrument packaging, or electro-optical hardware.\nStrong proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred; Inventor, Creo, or equivalent acceptable); demonstrated ability to take a design from concept through detailed drawing release.\nHands-on understanding of optomechanical design principles: kinematic mounting, flexure design, athermal compensation, stray light baffling, and vibration isolation.\nExperience with GD&T and tolerance analysis for precision assemblies.\nWorking knowledge of manufacturing processes: CNC milling, CNC turning, wire EDM, sheet metal fabrication, anodizing, and precision grinding; ability to design parts that are cost-effective to manufacture.\nPreferred qualifications\nProficiency in thermal simulation tools (ANSYS, COMSOL, SolidWorks Simulation) for predicting thermal distortion and designing thermal management solutions.\nExperience with structural simulation (modal, random vibration, shock response) for precision assemblies.\nDeep experience with materials selection for optical and defence applications: aluminum alloys (6061, 7075), stainless steels, titanium, Invar, machinable ceramics, and engineering plastics.\nFamiliarity with environmental qualification standards (MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-461) and designing hardware for shock, vibration, thermal cycling, humidity, and altitude.\nExperience in photonics, laser systems, scientific instrumentation, defence hardware, or aerospace packaging.\nExposure to athermalized optical assemblies, bonded optical elements, or vacuum-compatible mechanical design.\nExperience transitioning laboratory prototypes to manufacturable, field-deployable product.\nSecurity and compliance requirements\nMust be eligible to obtain and maintain Government of Canada security clearance, if required for assigned projects.\nMust be eligible to comply with requirements of the Controlled Goods Program, if required for assigned projects.\nMust be willing to participate in background screening, documentation, and compliance processes associated with security-sensitive work.\nExperience working in regulated, security-sensitive, or defence-oriented engineering environments is an asset.\nSkills and attributes\nStrong attention to detail, authenticity, and a sense of responsibility in all tasks.\nCritical thinking and a problem-solving mindset grounded in measurement and evidence.\nClear written and verbal communication; ability to produce design documentation that holds up under rigorous review.\nStrong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic, multidisciplinary team.\nBenefits\nExtended health care (including dental and vision)\nLife insurance\nEqual opportunity\nQ-Block Computing is an equal opportunity employer. We are committed to treating all employees and applicants with respect and dignity. Accommodations are available on request during the application and recruiting process.\nCanadian citizens and permanent residents are strongly encouraged to apply. All interested candidates are encouraged to apply.","description_format":"text","description_chars":7281,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":4,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":{"level":"bachelor","optional":false},"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":["Life insurance"],"hiring_locations":[],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["Quantum Science & Computing","Quantum Computing Hardware"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-10-02T14:47:43Z"}],"visa":[],"liveness":{"score":8,"band":"cold","label":"Long shot","p_open":1,"p_active":0.27,"p_room":0.28,"age_days":95,"expected_fill_days":33,"reasons":["conf:3","stale_co","ghost","win:tail","crowd:"],"computed_at":"2026-10-10T05:45:15Z"},"pay":{"stated_usd_annual":101911,"is_top_pay":false},"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/q-block-optomechanical-design-engineer","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/q-block-optomechanical-design-engineer.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-11T03:40:21Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"crawler","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":1549,"day_limit":5000,"remaining_today":3451,"minute_limit":60,"resets_at":"2026-10-12T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":2504443},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=2504443"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Fq-block-optomechanical-design-engineer"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Fq-block-optomechanical-design-engineer"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Fq-block-optomechanical-design-engineer"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/q-block-optomechanical-design-engineer\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Fq-block-optomechanical-design-engineer"}]}
