The company develops quantum timing, quantum-secure communications, and quantum computing platforms engineered for the performance, reliability, and environmental resilience that mission-critical applications demand - systems designed to be deployed, maintained, and trusted by operators who cannot afford ambiguity about whether the technology works.\nThe long-term vision is deeper than any single platform. Q-Block is pursuing a mission to decode Nature's foundational model - to build instruments of sufficient precision and coherence that they become tools for understanding the physical universe at its most fundamental level. Commercialization and science reinforce each other by design.\nAbout this role: The Photonics Integration Technician sits at the bench where engineering designs become working hardware. The role is responsible for the precision optical and photonic assembly, alignment, and testing of the subsystems that make up Q-Block's quantum platforms - free-space optics and fiber systems brought together to meet tight specifications, documented cleanly enough that the next build reproduces the first.\nThe successful candidate is a hands-on craftsperson with the patience and steadiness that precision optics require, and the discipline to follow procedures exactly while recognizing when a process can be improved. They work closely with the Optical Engineer and the broader hardware team, and take pride in assemblies that align the first time, test to spec, and leave the bench ready to be trusted.\nResponsibilities\nAssemble, align, and secure free-space optical components - lenses, mirrors, beamsplitters, waveplates, filters, modulators - on optical breadboards and within integrated hardware enclosures, per engineering drawings and work instructions.\nPrepare, cleave, connectorize, splice, and terminate single-mode and polarization-maintaining optical fibers; perform fiber-to-free-space coupling and fiber-to-component pigtailing.\nAlign optical assemblies to specified tolerances using precision stages, autocollimators, beam profilers, and power meters; document achieved alignment metrics.\nPerform functional and performance testing of optical assemblies including insertion loss, return loss, extinction ratio, beam quality, and power throughput measurements.\nOperate and maintain optical test equipment including power meters, optical spectrum analyzers, spectrometers, photodetectors, and interferometric measurement tools.\nFollow and contribute to the development of assembly work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and optical build travellers.\nRecord detailed build logs, inspection records, and test data in compliance with quality management requirements.\nPerform incoming inspection of optical components; verify conformance to purchase specifications and flag non-conformances.\nHandle and clean precision optical components using approved techniques and solvents; maintain optics cleaning stations and supplies.\nMaintain a clean and organized optical assembly workspace; comply with cleanroom or clean-bench protocols as required.\nSupport prototype development activities including first-article builds, rework, and design-for-manufacturing feedback to the Optical Engineer.\nCollaborate with hardware, firmware, and systems teams during subsystem integration and system-level testing.\nContribute to a culture of continuous learning, craftsmanship, and honest technical discussion.\nRequired qualifications\nCollege diploma in Photonics Technology, Optical Engineering Technology, Electronics Engineering Technology, or a related applied science program; or an equivalent combination of education and hands-on experience.\n2+ years of professional experience in optical or photonic assembly, alignment, and testing in a manufacturing, laboratory, or R&D environment.\nDemonstrated hands-on proficiency in precision optical alignment: free-space beam steering, fiber coupling, and optomechanical adjustment to tight tolerances.\nPractical experience with fiber optic preparation: cleaving, splicing (fusion and mechanical), connectorization, polishing, and fiber handling best practices.\nAbility to read and interpret optical assembly drawings, engineering specifications, and component datasheets.\nFamiliarity with optical test instruments: power meters, OSAs, beam profilers, photodetectors, and basic interferometric tools.\nExperience working with laser systems (Class 3B/4) and adherence to laser safety protocols.\nStrong attention to cleanliness and contamination control in optical assembly environments.\nPreferred qualifications\nGraduates of the Algonquin College Photonics program, Niagara College Photonics program, or equivalent Canadian applied photonics programs.\nExperience in photonics manufacturing, telecom component assembly, or scientific instrumentation environments.\nExposure to quantum hardware, precision measurement systems, or defence-oriented optical hardware.\nExperience with UV-curable adhesives, epoxy bonding of optical elements, or active alignment and cure processes.\nFamiliarity with ISO 9001 or comparable quality management practices in an optical assembly context.\nExperience contributing to SOP and work-instruction development in a production or pre-production environment.\nSecurity and compliance requirements\nMust be eligible to obtain and maintain Government of Canada security clearance, if required for assigned projects.\nMust be eligible to comply with requirements of the Controlled Goods Program, if required for assigned projects.\nMust be willing to participate in background screening, documentation, and compliance processes associated with security-sensitive work.\nSkills and attributes\nSteady hands, patience, and comfort working with small, delicate components over long alignment and build sessions.\nStrong attention to detail, authenticity, and a sense of responsibility in all tasks.\nAbility to follow documented procedures precisely while identifying opportunities for process improvement.\nClear written communication; able to produce build logs and test records that hold up under review.\nStrong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic, multidisciplinary team.\nBenefits\nExtended health care (including dental and vision)\nLife insurance\nEqual opportunity\nQ-Block Computing is an equal opportunity employer. We are committed to treating all employees and applicants with respect and dignity. Accommodations are available on request during the application and recruiting process.\nCanadian citizens and permanent residents are strongly encouraged to apply. All interested candidates are encouraged to apply.","description_format":"text","description_chars":6859,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":2,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":{"level":"bachelor","optional":false},"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":["Continuous learning","Life insurance"],"hiring_locations":[],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["Optical Communications","Quantum Science & Computing","Quantum Computing Hardware"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-10-02T14:47:43Z"}],"visa":[],"liveness":{"score":5,"band":"cold","label":"Long shot","p_open":1,"p_active":0.18,"p_room":0.28,"age_days":97,"expected_fill_days":29,"reasons":["conf:0","stale_co","ghost","win:tail","crowd:junior"],"computed_at":"2026-10-12T06:55:09Z"},"pay":{"stated_usd_annual":52712,"is_top_pay":false},"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/q-block-photonics-integration-technician","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/q-block-photonics-integration-technician.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-13T01:18:32Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"crawler_verified","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":1943,"day_limit":null,"remaining_today":null,"minute_limit":300,"resets_at":"2026-10-14T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":2504443},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=2504443"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Fq-block-photonics-integration-technician"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Fq-block-photonics-integration-technician"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Fq-block-photonics-integration-technician"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/q-block-photonics-integration-technician\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Fq-block-photonics-integration-technician"}]}
