In this role, you will serve as the primary focus is to identify, develop, and deploy quantum computing use cases that align with the DOE’s strategic mission areas, including advanced energy technologies, national security, climate modeling, and large-scale scientific simulation. This position will help develop and demonstrate a portfolio of government-relevant applications that are scientifically relevant to DOE, solutions that will ultimately be an integral part of the DOE scientific ecosystem and will internally help direct our US based efforts in the development of applications and algorithms of our current and next generation quantum computing systems. This is a technical/business development role in a front-facing organization to help develop these partnerships.\nKey Responsibilities:\n Strategic Lab EngagementServe as the primary point of contact for DOE National Labs (e.g., ORNL, LBNL, ANL, LLNL, LANL, PNNL).\nBuild and maintain deep technical relationships with Lab Directors, Quantum Information Science (QIS) research leads, and user facility managers.\nNavigate DOE complex ecosystems, including the National Quantum Information Science Research Centers (NQISRCs).\nMonitor and track DOE Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs), Requests for Information (RFIs), and lab call solicitations.\n\n Use Case Identification & Co-DevelopmentMap organizational quantum hardware/software capabilities against specific DOE mission use cases (e.g., materials science, grid optimization, chemical catalysis, high-energy physics).\nTranslate complex DOE scientific requirements into actionable quantum algorithms and application roadmaps.\nCoordinate joint research proposals, Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs), and Strategic Partnership Projects (SPPs).\nWorking directly with counterparts in the DOE to co-design algorithms, workflows, and capabilities\nReport on findings and progress with key stakeholders\nAs/when appropriate, identify dual-use commercial applications\n\nEducation & Experience:\nMaster’s or Ph.D. in Quantum Physics, Computer Science, Chemistry, Applied Mathematics, or a related STEM field.\n10+ years of direct experience working with or within the DOE National Laboratory complex or a federal R&D environment.\n10+ years of experience in quantum computing applications including but not limited to chemistry, material science, condensed matter physics, AI/ML, nuclear physics, high energy physics, plasma and fusion\nUnderstanding principles of error correction, quantum algorithm design, and deep understanding of fault-tolerant computation\nExperience with resource estimation for fault-tolerant algorithms and selecting appropriate algorithmic primitives and data representations\nAbility to transition algorithmic capabilities from NISQ, to partially fault tolerant, to fully fault tolerant.\nExperience optimizing algorithms across all the layers of the stack, both near term and in fault-tolerant era.\nExperience with hybrid workflows and high-performance computing, and ability to use AI to optimize workflows\nAbility to identify regimes in which the quantum algorithm offers a credible advantage over the best-known classical method\nOriginal contributions to algorithms such as Hamiltonian simulation, phase estimation, quantum signal processing, block encoding, state preparation, or quantum scientific computing\nExperience connecting error bounds to end-to-end scientific accuracy\nExperience leading and motivating groups of researchers with varied skills and years of experience\nUnderstand dual-use technologies and how to DOE and science applications can lead to commercial value","description_format":"text","description_chars":3895,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":10,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":{"level":"master","optional":false},"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":[],"hiring_locations":[{"name":"United States","iso":"US","kind":"country"}],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["Hardware","Science & Engineering","Quantum Science & Computing","Quantum Computing Hardware"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-09-23T10:54:30Z"}],"liveness":{"score":86,"band":"hot","label":"Hiring now","p_open":1,"p_active":0.86,"p_room":1,"age_days":0,"expected_fill_days":27,"reasons":["conf:2","win:early","comp:brand"],"computed_at":"2026-09-24T03:34:14Z"},"pay":{"stated_usd_annual":301498,"is_top_pay":true},"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/quantinuum-sr-director-of-usg-partnerships-use-case-development","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/quantinuum-sr-director-of-usg-partnerships-use-case-development.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-09-24T03:34:14Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers"}}
