Our machine is designed to take stock bottles of medication and produce counted, labeled vials, so that pharmacists and technicians can spend their time on patients. Our first product is built to work behind the pharmacy counter and to be operated by pharmacy staff.\nAbout the Role\nWe are building out the Edge squad: the engineers who write the software that runs on our machine and tells its hardware what to do. You own hard parts of that software end to end, from the links to the boards to the way a new version reaches a machine in the field and behaves there. On every path you own you build to one rule: when the machine cannot confirm a step, it stops safely and says why.\nThis is a senior-level role.\nWhat You'll Own\nHardware links - The edge software's side of the links to the motor board and the other controllers, over CAN, serial, USB and Ethernet: framing, timing, errors, reconnects and the tests that prove them. You set how they are built and tested.\n\nFill sequencing - The state machines that take a fill from the moment it reaches the machine to the moment the machine finishes or stops. You set how they are designed and tested.\n\nContracts at the boundaries - The contracts with the microcontrollers and the vision service. You version them and change them with the firmware and vision engineers, so that old and new versions work together through a release.\n\nWhat the software needs from the image - The services, devices, bus settings and packages the edge software needs from the machine's Linux image. You make those changes with the engineers who own the image.\n\nField behavior - What the edge software reports from a machine in the field, how it is diagnosed from a distance, and its part in how a new version arrives and how it is rolled back if it fails. You build it with the platform and systems reliability engineers.\n\nFail-closed behavior - The rule on every path you own: when the machine cannot confirm a step, it stops safely and says why. You design the failure path first and prove it on the bench.\n\nFirst 90 Days\nDay 30: You have built the edge software, run it against the boards on a bench, and merged changes through review. You can trace a fill through the state machines and name each point where it has to stop if a step cannot be confirmed.\n\nDay 60: You own a hardware link and its contract end to end. You have made a change to the machine's Linux image with the engineers who own it, and run it on a bench machine.\n\nDay 90: You have taken a change from design through a release to a machine on the bench, with its failure paths tested first. You hold a written plan for what the edge software reports from the field and how it is diagnosed from a distance.\n\nWhat We're Looking For\nMust-Have\nOwnership - you have written production C, C++ or Rust on Linux and owned what you shipped, from the first design to the fault found in the field.\n\nHardware integration over buses - CAN, RS-485 and other serial links, USB. You have debugged a link with an analyzer on the wire when the logs and the hardware disagreed.\n\nReal-time orchestration and state machines - you have sequenced motion, sensing and I/O where partial failure is normal, and you design the failure path first: when a step cannot be confirmed, the system stops safely and says why.\n\nMCU boundary literacy - you understand how a microcontroller runs and what it exposes to a Linux host, and you have kept versioned device protocols with firmware working through change, for example a protobuf schema, a CAN message set or a register map.\n\nEmbedded Linux integration - you have done substantial work getting software running well on an embedded Linux system: its services, devices, start-up, configuration and updates, worked out with the owners of its image.\n\nConnected device fleets - you have run devices in the field: updates, remote diagnostics, telemetry, and the recovery of a unit you cannot touch.\n\nThe edge software is written in Rust, and you will work in it every day. Rust in production is preferred.\nNice-to-Have\nIndustrial x86 and ARM platforms in a shipped product.\n\nFull ownership of an embedded Linux distribution: building and maintaining the image of a shipped device, from what goes into it to how it updates.\n\nKernel and board bring-up: drivers, device trees and boot on a new board.\n\nHardened device platforms: verified start-up, signed updates, a read-only system and device identity.\n\nNVIDIA Jetson: JetPack and Linux for Tegra, secure boot, field updates and the inference stack.\n\nRobotics, medical devices, automotive or industrial automation.\n\nHow We Hire\nRecruiter Screen (30 min)\n\nTechnical Interview (90 min) - a take-home exercise of 2 to 3 hours, in C, C++ or Rust, sent at least 24 hours before: a small piece of device software built around a state machine, which has to stay correct when power is lost at any step. We go through it together, then build on it.\n\nDesign Interview (60 min) - the path a new version of the software takes to a fleet of machines, with the failure cases in from the start.\n\nLeadership Interview (60 min) - how you own your work and work across squads.\n\nTwo interviewers score each technical stage independently.\nWhat We Offer\nOwnership - hard parts of the edge software end to end, from the links to the boards to machines in the field\n\nHard problems: real-time sequencing across boards, contracts with firmware and vision, and machines in the field you cannot touch\n\nSmall team, zero bureaucracy, high trust\n\nWhy Join Us Now?\nImpact & Growth\nDirect Impact: The code you write tells the machine's hardware what to do, on the bench and in the field\n\nGrowth: The work runs from one hardware link to how the software behaves on every machine in the field\n\nTeam and Culture\nReports to the Head of Software Engineering with significant autonomy and influence\n\nWho You Work With: You work every day with the engineers who build the edge software, and closely with the firmware, vision, platform and systems reliability engineers\n\nWhere We Work: Hybrid, three days a week at our headquarters in the Bay Area; the bench work needs the hardware in front of you\n\nOur Values\nServant Leadership\n\nDo the Hard Things\n\nOwn Your Work\n\nDefault is Now\n\nOwn Your Work comes first in this role: what you ship to a machine is yours until it works there.\nContact: If you have any questions, please contact us ","description_format":"text","description_chars":6428,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":null,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":null,"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":[],"hiring_locations":[{"name":"United States","iso":"US","kind":"country"}],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["Industrial Robotics"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-10-09T05:43:37Z"}],"visa":[],"liveness":{"score":90,"band":"hot","label":"Hiring now","p_open":1,"p_active":0.903,"p_room":1,"age_days":1,"expected_fill_days":30,"reasons":["conf:1","velocity","win:early"],"computed_at":"2026-10-10T05:45:15Z"},"pay":null,"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/queue-senior-edge-engineer","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/queue-senior-edge-engineer.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-11T20:36:33Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"crawler_verified","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":8749,"day_limit":null,"remaining_today":null,"minute_limit":300,"resets_at":"2026-10-12T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":3787073},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=3787073"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Fqueue-senior-edge-engineer"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Fqueue-senior-edge-engineer"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Fqueue-senior-edge-engineer"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/queue-senior-edge-engineer\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Fqueue-senior-edge-engineer"}]}
