Co-founded by Sam Ballmer, Connie Ballmer, and Steve Ballmer in 2024, Rainier focuses on providing philanthropic funding to non-government organizations pursuing strategies that operate at the speed and scale needed to dramatically cut greenhouse gas emissions. \nRainier supports work in many parts of the world and on a range of strategies such as forests and land use, clean energy, clean transportation, industrial decarbonization, buildings, and super pollutants. The organization is also supporting work in climate cross-cutting areas such as strategic communications, climate finance, legal, movement building and public engagement, and public policy. \nThe Opportunity \nRainier Climate is seeking a Program Director, Buildings to join its world class team in Bellevue, Washington. \nThe Program Director roles represent a rare and unique opportunity to join a philanthropic organization in the early stages of shaping its strategic trajectory, culture, and programmatic aims in climate. Working in close partnership with the President, Vice President of Programs, and alongside the cofounders, who collectively have decades of philanthropic experience and insights, Rainier’s team of Program Directors are instrumental in operationalizing its ambitious grantmaking objectives in the coming years and will help to further define its vision and strategy for innovative and urgent action in the climate sector. \nReporting to the Vice President of Programs, the Program Directors are expected to be senior leaders in the climate field, with deep and extensive knowledge of the many opportunities, challenges, and strategic approaches that Rainier might consider when addressing its broader priorities for work in sector. Externally, the Program Directors serve as leaders, thought partners, and collaborators within the ecosystem of funder, nonprofit, government, and business communities in climate. They monitor progress of existing strategies and approaches and develop new strategies as appropriate for consideration and approval. \nIn order for Rainier to remain agile and entrepreneurial, the Program Directors will at times act as complementary generalists for the entire portfolio of work at the organization. This means being able to contribute to or even pivot to new focus areas in the future. Working as a team, the Program Directors will be active, supporting members across all program areas, and will work collaboratively with the Vice President of Programs, President, and cofounders in the planning and implementation of Rainier’s strategy. \nProgram Director - Buildings \nBuildings sit at the center of the climate challenge, driving electricity demand and shaping how grids are planned and paid for. They create demand for the steel, cement, and other materials at the heart of industrial decarbonization. They have a major impact on how cities grow, how people move, and what households pay for energy. Together, buildings account for a substantial share of global emissions. Decarbonizing them is not a niche technical exercise. It is a systems problem that runs through power markets, transportation and land use, industrial supply chains, housing affordability, public health, workforce, and finance. \nRainier sees buildings as one of the most important and underleveraged frontiers in climate philanthropy, and it is why we are looking for a strategic leader who sees it the same way. The Program Director for Buildings will lead the development of a globally informed strategy to accelerate emissions reductions across the built environment. They will draw on a broad understanding of how change happens across sectors: in policy, in markets, in capital flows, and in public demand. This portfolio lends itself exceptionally well to leaders who have shaped change in complex climate systems, are energized to apply that experience to a field that is ripe for fresh thinking and greater coordination, and who are ready to test assumptions and innovate. \nThe Program Director will: \nIdentify where buildings work can unlock the greatest impact, and the levers that matter most, across geographies, including the US, Europe, China, India and other high-emitting regions.\nDesign integrated philanthropic approaches spanning national, regional and local policy; market transformation; finance; and on-the-ground implementation.\nWork closely with Rainier colleagues to find shared opportunities and ensure the Buildings portfolio strengthens, and is strengthened by, Rainier's broader climate goals. \nServe as a convener across government, business, finance, and civil society to strengthen coordination, accelerate learning, and scale solutions. \nThis is not a role confined to a single lane. Like all of Rainier's Program Directors, the Buildings lead will act as a complementary generalist on the team, contributing to strategy across the organization and helping shape where Rainier places its biggest bets over time. \nKey responsibilities for the Program Director role include: \nPortfolio Management \nLead the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of an impact-oriented philanthropic strategy and grants portfolio in buildings decarbonization.\nEffectively communicate program vision, strategies, and impact. Represent Rainier’s interests to a broad array of external audiences and constituencies, including engaging in due diligence, funder collaboration, and networking to capitalize on emerging opportunities relevant to the organization’s mission and priorities. \nIdentify partners, experts, consultants, and co-funders to advance programmatic goals and maintain accurate and current knowledge about trends, movements, policy developments, and philanthropic approaches. \nMake grant recommendations that support efforts to enact policies, create public demand, and build political will to achieve Rainier’s objectives in the climate sector. Conduct extensive outreach and rigorous due diligence to identify and support impactful grantees, from institutional to grassroots-level organizations, and across a variety of political, economic, and policy spectrums. \nExternal Engagement \nIdentify and establish the necessary partnerships within NGO, policy, corporate, and philanthropic sectors that together will inform philanthropic strategy and grantmaking for high-impact grants.\nStay current on emerging issues, trends, and interventions related to climate change and decarbonization. \nConvene external stakeholders when needed, including grant recipients, subject matter experts, policy stakeholders, co-funders, and others, in order to explore, compare, and coordinate strategies. \nStrategic Learning & Assessment \nContribute to building Rainier’s learning and impact assessment framework, ensuring that grantmaking strategies and approaches for the portfolio are creating meaningful impact and the organization is learning from its successes and failures in order to continuously improve.\nUse data and knowledge gathered in the field to advise on trends, movements, and policy developments related to climate and clean energy. \nManage external relationships with other funders, advisors, and grant recipients to facilitate the exchange of information, maximize lessons learned, and foster cross-organization collaboration. \nHelp plan and facilitate learning opportunities for grant recipients, as well as develop progress indicators with grant recipients to monitor and track the impact of projects funded. \nManagement & Organizational Leadership \nContribute to efforts to develop, implement, and assess organizational structures, systems, and processes in order to ensure effective and efficient use of both internal and external resources.\nDevelop and manage program budgets, including assessing and analyzing resource allocation matters. \nBe attentive to legal compliance and the alignment of Rainier’s activities to its mission and impact goals. \nIn addition to managing consulting resources, some Program Directors may manage a program associate role, which will be a shared resource across the program team. \nQualifications and Experience \nAlignment on Mission and Strategic Communications Expertise \nDeep commitment to the mission and values of Rainier Climate, with an unwavering passion and drive and to make a lasting impact on climate change.\nMinimum of 15 years of senior experience designing and executing high-impact climate decarbonization strategies at scale, ideally across multiple sectors or systems. \nWhile bringing a perspective on strategies and the role of philanthropy in driving positive change, the ideal candidate will not be wedded to one approach or theory of change; rather an ability to leverage their expertise to identify multiple pathways and strategic interventions for mission impact. \nStrategic Leadership \nExperience working with multiple types of capitals (financial, social, relational, human, intellectual, and others) in the advancement of an organization’s mission.\nA collaborative, entrepreneurial operator with the ability to readily identify opportunities for innovation and change. Must have the intellectual agility and dynamism needed to contribute to strategy discussions across a variety of disciplines within the climate sector. \nExperience working in and helping to facilitate an enabling team environment, encouraging colleagues to learn, engage with each other, act with integrity, co-create, and remain curious and compassionate in the face of challenges and setbacks. \nProject Management and Implementation \nSince Rainier will maintain a small, nimble team of senior leaders and program staff, Program. Directors must bring the appropriate balance of strategic thinking, hands-on, individual contributor skills, and team collaboration.\nExcellent project leadership and management skills. \nFinancial acumen, with the ability to contribute to program budget development and prioritization of resource allocation. \nRepresentation and Networks \nDemonstrated background building and operating in partnership networks and collaborating with diverse stakeholders, including in the government, NGO, and philanthropic sectors.\nStrong analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information and convey it clearly to a range of audiences. \nCompensation & Benefits \nAs a mission-driven organization, we are committed to offering competitive compensation and benefits aligned with the talent market in climate philanthropy. New hires are typically brought in within the hiring range for the role (from the salary range minimum to the midpoint), providing room for compensation growth over time. \nAnnual pay increases are evaluated based on multiple factors, including demonstrated skills in the role, progress and performance against goals, and accrued experience. Actual placement within the range will be determined by a candidate’s job-related skills, experience, and expertise, as assessed during the interview process. \nFeatured Benefits & Perks \nMedical, dental, and vision insurance with employee and dependent premiums entirely paid for by Rainier Climate.\n3 weeks of paid vacation annually. \n11 paid holidays, plus paid days off for the weekdays between Christmas and New Year. \n80 hours of paid sick leave annually. \n401(k) with 12% employer contribution. \n2:1 Ballmer Family Giving Match for charitable contributions, and $50 donation per volunteer hour. \nProfessional development reimbursement up to $2,000 per year. \nEmployer-paid life insurance of 3x salary up to $1,000,000. \nReimbursement up to $40,000 (lifetime limit) for Fertility & Family Building (including Back-up Childcare reimbursement up to $5,000 annually). \nHealthcare and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account (FSA) options. \nParking or transportation (Orca card) up to $250 monthly. \nCash stipend of $300/month (for cell phone, wellness expenses, etc.). \nIdentity theft protection....","description_format":"text","description_chars":13125,"description_truncated":true,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":15,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":null,"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":["Hybrid work","Life insurance","Professional development","Vision insurance"],"hiring_locations":[{"name":"United States","iso":"US","kind":"country"}],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["Nonprofits & Foundations"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-11-02T23:51:32Z"}],"visa":[],"liveness":{"score":8,"band":"cold","label":"Long shot","p_open":1,"p_active":0.269,"p_room":0.28,"age_days":147,"expected_fill_days":28,"reasons":["conf:2","win:tail","crowd:"],"computed_at":"2026-11-07T05:47:08Z"},"pay":null,"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/rainier-climate-program-director-buildings","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/rainier-climate-program-director-buildings.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-11-07T15:56:59Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"crawler_verified","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":22117,"day_limit":null,"remaining_today":null,"minute_limit":300,"resets_at":"2026-11-08T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":1811479},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=1811479"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Frainier-climate-program-director-buildings"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Frainier-climate-program-director-buildings"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Frainier-climate-program-director-buildings"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/rainier-climate-program-director-buildings\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Frainier-climate-program-director-buildings"}],"agent":{"mcp":"https://alion.io/mcp/jobs","mcp_open":"https://alion.io/mcp/open","next":[{"tool":"get_job","arguments":{"id":3650019}},{"tool":"search_jobs","arguments":{"company":"rainierclimate.com","detail":"compact"}},{"tool":"match_people","arguments":{"job_id":3650019},"note":"people open to offers who fit this vacancy"}],"note":"The same data through MCP tools: https://alion.io/mcp/open needs no sign-in (compact searches, postings, people); https://alion.io/mcp with an Alion account has everything.
