Think of the visual language of Eye on Design, The New Yorker, Its Nice That, Vox, The Swaddle, Ugra, Homegrown, The Ken: conceptual, witty, opinionated editorial art - not literal renderings of what the headline says. A story about payments fraud shouldn't get a stock-style padlock; it should communicate an idea. Day to day, you'll move between illustration and information design, and help shape the publication's visual voice as it grows - working alongside editors and writers who care about how stories look, with real room to experiment.\nWhat we expect from you\nA distinct visual point of view, with oodles of personality and wit. Your work should be recognisable as yours.\nConceptual thinking above all: you turn abstract ideas into visual metaphors. layout, typography, hierarchy, colour, grid systems - with an editorial (not just product) sensibility.\nAbility to turn data and complex reporting into clear, engaging infographics and data visualizations: charts, timelines, maps, explainer diagrams.\nComfort designing for long-form digital reading - scrollytelling, interactive charts, embedded visual essays - not just static pages.\nPlugged into visual culture: you follow design trends, internet aesthetics, and editorial art globally - and you have opinions about them that show up in your work.\nStrong self-direction: you take a piece from concept sketch to shipped visual with minimal hand-holding, and can explain your choices clearly to editors and reporters.\nTools\nFigma, Illustrator, Photoshop for graphics, illustration, collage, and layout\nAI image tools (Midjourney, Gemini, Firefly, or similar) as one instrument among many -
