The US has more than 95,000 metric tons of used nuclear fuel and nowhere to put it. This role develops and applies the nuclear safety analysis that lets us turn it back into energy: transient and accident analysis, dose analysis, process hazard analysis (HAZOPs, FMEAs, etc.), and integrated safety analysis that demonstrate the Recycling Pilot facility meets our safety goals and the regulator’s requirements, from preliminary design through licensing and into operation.\nThe job takes judgment as much as method. Safety analysis at SHINE is expected to be right, not merely conservative: the analyst chooses assumptions they can defend, understands where the margin is and what it costs, and tells the design team when a requirement is not earning its keep as clearly as when a hazard is under-controlled.\nHybrid work arrangement will be considered. Our key facilities are in Janesville, Wisconsin and Fitchburg, WI. Candidates may be asked to travel occasionally for team meetings or onsite engagements, depending on business needs.\nThe base salary range for this position is $100,000 - $150,000 per year plus a comprehensive compensation package. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location.\nSpecific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:\nOwn the Safety Analysis\nPerform system analyses of anticipated transients and postulated accidents to demonstrate that safety and licensing requirements are satisfied.\nPerform nuclear calculations to determine the total amount of material at risk as input into release calculations, using industry-standard codes such as MCNP and SCALE.\nPerform radiological and chemical dose calculations for normal and accidental releases.\nLead or support Integrated Safety Analysis (ISA) activities including hazard evaluations (e.g., HAZOP, FMEA), process hazard analyses (PHA), and accident sequence development.\nReview Quality Classification Forms that determine whether equipment is credited in the safety analysis, and challenge classifications the analysis does not support.\nOwn the safety analysis documentation for the Pilot facility, including dose release calculations, HAZOP and FMEA reports, and the ISA Summary or its equivalent.\nPerform hand calculations using first principles to support and validate analysis results.\nPerform code benchmarking and validation analyses to support code qualification and methodology development.\nSupport Design and Licensing\nChoose analysis assumptions that are defensible rather than merely conservative. Document the reasoning and quantify the margin they create.\nTell the design team where the analysis shows a requirement can be relaxed, as well as where a hazard needs more control.\nContribute to licensing documents for NRC (or DOE) review and approval that describe how the suite of nuclear analysis codes will be applied along with inputs, models, and correlations to establish the design bases.\nSupport the licensing team in responding to regulator questions on the safety analysis.\nSuccess in the First Twelve Months:\nThe safety analyses needed for the Pilot facility construction permit application (or equivalent) are complete, with assumptions and margins documented.\nThe analysis has been used to remove or relax at least one requirement that could not be justified, with the reasoning documented.\nAnalysis methods and codes are qualified and documented to a standard the licensing team can carry to the regulator.\nRequirements\nQualifications:\nEvidence of owning a safety analysis from method to regulator: has authored analyses that went into a licensing submittal or safety basis document and defended them in review.\nDemonstrated judgment on conservatism: has questioned a default assumption or margin in an analysis and found an approach that was as safe or safer and materially simpler, faster or less expensive.\nAbility to perform and check hand calculations from first principles, and to recognize when a code result is wrong.\nDemonstrated technical writing skills: analyses a regulator can follow.\nKnowledge of 10 CFR 70 integrated safety analysis requirements, or the equivalent under 10 CFR Part 50 or the DOE safety basis framework (10 CFR Part 830).\nAbility to critically evaluate information, and the confidence to ask questions when things do not make sense.\nB.S. degree in Nuclear Engineering or related discipline from an accredited institution.\nFive (5) years of experience in nuclear safety analysis; relevant graduate research or academic experience may be counted toward this requirement.\nPreferred Qualifications:\nExperience developing radioactive dose calculations including five-factor formula, source term development, and radioactive material transport, including use of standards and guides such as FGR 11 and 12 and DOE-HDBK-3010\nExperience using MCNP and/or SCALE nuclear analysis codes\nPrevious training in performing or facilitating process hazards analysis (PHA), including HAZOP or FMEA\nExperience with the chemical and radiological hazards of aqueous separations or other fuel cycle processes.\nExperience under both the NRC and DOE regulatory frameworks.\nWorking Conditions and Physical Effort:\nEmployees must be able to perform the essential functions of the position satisfactorily. If requested, reasonable accommodations will be made to enable employees with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this job, absent undue hardship.\nEligibility for employment is conditioned on the applicant’s ability to qualify for access to information subject to U.S. Export Controls. Additionally, applicant’s eligibility may be conditioned based upon meeting the Nuclear Regulatory Commission requirements for access to Safeguards Information, which typically requires a pre-employment drug screen, fingerprinting and criminal background check.\nSHINE values diversity in all its forms as a critical component of innovation, which is fundamental to our success. Every member of the SHINE community benefits from the talents and experiences of our peers, from the mutual respect we exercise, and from the responsibility we take for our actions.\nSHINE Technologies is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability or veteran status.\nPay Transparency Policy\nEmployee Rights Under the NLRA\nEqual Opportunity Employment\nE-Verify","description_format":"text","description_chars":6585,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":5,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":{"level":"bachelor","optional":false},"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":["Hybrid work"],"hiring_locations":[],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["Nuclear Energy"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-10-05T15:59:38Z"}],"visa":[],"liveness":{"score":86,"band":"hot","label":"Hiring now","p_open":1,"p_active":0.86,"p_room":1,"age_days":8,"expected_fill_days":60,"reasons":["conf:6","win:early"],"computed_at":"2026-10-14T06:34:16Z"},"pay":{"stated_usd_annual":150000,"is_top_pay":true},"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/redesigned-nuclear-safety-analysis-engineer-recycling","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/redesigned-nuclear-safety-analysis-engineer-recycling.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-14T17:03:44Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"crawler_verified","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":21769,"day_limit":null,"remaining_today":null,"minute_limit":300,"resets_at":"2026-10-15T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":1936906},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=1936906"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Fredesigned-nuclear-safety-analysis-engineer-recycling"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Fredesigned-nuclear-safety-analysis-engineer-recycling"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Fredesigned-nuclear-safety-analysis-engineer-recycling"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/redesigned-nuclear-safety-analysis-engineer-recycling\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Fredesigned-nuclear-safety-analysis-engineer-recycling"}]}
