Our firmware is developed mainly using C. You'll also have the opportunity to develop mobile and desktop applications using C# and other technologies.\nThe role is available for hybrid working, currently set as two days on site per week. From time to time there will be a need to attend site to carry out certain tasks and weʼre likely to ask you to attend more often during key phases of projects.\nResponsibilities\nHelp design and architect new firmware Implement new embedded protocols \nDevelop unit, behavioural and integration tests \nDevelop and maintain software components, APIs and libraries used to communicate with Renishaw devices and instruments \nConduct design and code reviews W\nWork closely with others in a multi-disciplinary team \nCollaborate as part of an agile software team \nWork with project and product managers to define product specifications \nWork closely with electronics engineers to optimise system engineering \nSupervise or mentor more junior members of the team. \nKey Requirements\nDegree or equivalent qualification in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or similar discipline (or similar demonstrable experience)\nWorking knowledge of:\nModern microcontrollers Embedded C and firmware design \nTest-driven development / behavioural-driven development \nMultithreaded programming on real time operating systems \nLow level protocols - particularly UART / RS485, SPI, I2C \nUnderstanding of:\nDistributed version control systems (Git) \nSoftware development lifecycle, from specification, design, and test-driven development, through to deployment, verification, and maintenance of software components \nAbility to:\nMeasure timings, power, debug using digital oscilloscope etc \nDemonstrate experience debugging embedded systems \nFollow established development processes and guidelines \nCommunicate effectively with colleagues across different disciplines \nProduce clear, concise technical documentation \nKey Technologies\nEmbedded C, VS Code \nCMake \nNXP, Nordic MCUʼs \nFreeRTOS, Zephyr \nSEGGER debuggers \nVisual Studio, NET (C#) + WPF (XAML) \nGit (or equivalent) \nAtlassian toolset (or equivalent) \nUnit test frameworks (unity, fff, Googletest) \nUSB, Bluetooth and serial communication technologies \nDesirable Requirements\nExperience or interest in: \nDevelopment of USB devices and transport protocols (e.g SSI, USBTMC) \nTest-driven development in an embedded environment \nDeveloping on microcontrollers with embedded C++ / Assembler \nUsing RTOS for embedded applications (particularly FreeRTOS) \nHigher level application software development (C# .NET, WPF, PowerShell, Python etc) \nSoftware design languages (UML/Yourdon) \nAwareness of:\nAgile software development methodologies \nDevOps practices (CI/CD, automated testing and task management tools) \nMachine tool languages, geometry and measurement systems \nObject oriented software design, MVVM and design patterns \nExposure to:\nARM CORTEX MCUʼs - in particular NXP LPC series and Nordic nRF series \nElectronics background \nDeveloping design solutions through schematic, PCB layout, prototyping, and testing using EDA tools such as Altium and Zuken \nUse of protocol analysers for debug and test \nIAR toolchain \nTools such as IAR Embedded Workbench, CLion, Eclipse, MCUExpresso, MS Visual Studio, Visual Studio Code, Enterprise Architect, Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket pipelines \nCollaboration as part of an Agile Software team, ensuring quality, timeliness, value, and defining clear requirements \nPerson Specification\nContinuous Improvement: A drive to enhance processes and practices. \nCollaboration and Communication: Ability to work in teams and convey ideas effectively. \nInnovative Problem-Solving: A genuine interest in creative solutions and a desire to tackle intricate challenges. \nCritical Thinking and Learning: Eagerness to learn, apply new knowledge and utilize system-based thinking. \nOwnership and Efficiency: Willingness to take responsibility and work swiftly. \nSuccess in this role hinges on teamwork, self-motivation, attention to detail, and proactive task management\nBenefits\nWhen you join Renishaw, we're committing to your future career.
