Working within Research & Development, you will contribute to the full product lifecycle, from concept and architecture through verification, release to production, and long-term support.\nThese are hands-on engineering roles, combining FPGA design, verification and hardware bring-up with close collaboration across electronics, software, systems, algorithms and mechanical engineering teams. Depending on experience and grade, you will also provide technical leadership, influence engineering strategy, and mentor developing engineers.\nThe FPGA frequently interfaces with high-speed digital electronics, embedded processors, sensors and analogue circuitry. As such, a strong appreciation of system-level design and hardware/software interaction is essential.\nKey Responsibilities\nFPGA Design & Development\nDevelop FPGA architectures and RTL designs from concept through to production release.\n\nDesign, implement and maintain high-quality VHDL solutions with a focus on performance, reliability, portability and efficient resource utilisation.\n\nPerform timing analysis, constraint development, timing closure and design optimisation.\n\nImplement and verify FPGA functionality in both simulation and on target hardware.\n\nDevelop reusable and maintainable IP blocks and design frameworks for use across multiple projects and product generations.\n\nSupport product sustainment, issue investigation and design improvements throughout the product lifecycle.\n\nVerification & Validation\nDevelop robust verification environments using modern methodologies including OSVVM and VUnit.\n\nCreate reusable, self-checking testbenches with measurable verification coverage.\n\nDefine verification strategies, plans and acceptance criteria.\n\nDrive continuous improvement in simulation, regression testing and automated verification workflows.\n\nSupport hardware validation, debugging and system integration activities.\n\nSystems & Product Development\nCapture, analyse and refine requirements, ensuring clear traceability from customer and system requirements through to implementation and verification.\n\nWork closely with systems, electronics, software, algorithms and test engineers to deliver integrated solutions.\n\nEvaluate and implement signal processing, control and embedded algorithms within FPGA architectures.\n\nContribute to safety, reliability and compliance activities, including design assurance and audit-ready engineering evidence.\n\nProduce and maintain high-quality technical documentation, including architecture specifications, interface definitions, verification reports and design rationale.\n\nTechnical Leadership\nProvide technical leadership for FPGA development activities across projects.\n\nDrive engineering excellence through design reviews, code reviews, development standards and best practices.\n\nSupport planning, estimation, technical risk management and project delivery.\n\nMentor engineers, graduates and apprentices, helping develop both technical capability and engineering judgement.\n\nPromote reusable design approaches and continuous improvement across tools, methodologies and processes.\n\nEssential Requirements\nSenior FPGA Engineer\nDegree in Electronic Engineering, Physics, Computer Engineering or a related discipline.\n\nStrong commercial experience developing FPGA solutions using VHDL.\n\nSolid understanding of digital design principles, including:\nTiming analysis and timing closure\n\nClock domain crossing techniques\n\nReset architectures\n\nPipelining and resource optimisation\n\nHigh-speed digital interfaces\n\nExperience implementing and verifying FPGA designs in simulation and on hardware.\n\nUnderstanding of FPGA development tools and design flows.\n\nAbility to communicate effectively within a multidisciplinary engineering team.\n\nAdditional Requirements for Lead FPGA Engineer\nSignificant experience architecting complex FPGA-based systems.\n\nProven ability to lead FPGA development activities through the full product lifecycle.\n\nStrong understanding of requirements management, design reviews and engineering governance.\n\nExperience mentoring engineers and providing technical leadership.\n\nDemonstrated ability to balance technical excellence with delivery objectives.\n\nDesirable Requirements\nExperience with Intel (Altera) FPGA devices and Quartus development tools.\n\nExperience of OSVVM, VUnit and modern verification methodologies.\n\nFamiliarity with VS Code, Active-HDL or equivalent simulation environments.\n\nKnowledge of embedded software development using C, C++ or Python.\n\nExperience with Git, Azure DevOps and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) workflows.\n\nUnderstanding of DSP, control systems and numerical algorithms.\n\nKnowledge of high-speed digital design, EMC and mixed-signal electronics.\n\nExperience working within regulated or safety-conscious product development environments.\n\nPerson Specification\nYou are a passionate and capable engineer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges and delivering robust, high-quality products.\nYou combine strong FPGA design expertise with a systems-level mindset and are comfortable working across disciplinary boundaries.
