We’ve done a lot with a little-we have a growing engineering team and a laundry list of features and foundational improvements we want to tackle.\nTo continue our fast-paced growth, we need to build a world-class engineering team. You’ll help us get there by owning end-to-end projects, talking with customers, and ultimately supporting the growth of Retool the product and the business.\nWHAT YOU'LL DO\nData is the fuel that powers Retool apps and workflows. The primary responsibility of the Resources team is to make sure that this “data fuel” is readily available and accessible to support new use-cases built on Retool. This means:\nWe’ll make it possible to connect any external resource, such that the lack of ability to connect existing data doesn’t block new use-cases or customers.\nWe’ll provide built-in resources, such that builders always have whatever they need to build their next app, from databases to LLM-powered workflows.\nWe’ll make it easy and intuitive to reliably work with these resources, such that it’s far easier to work with data in Retool than outside of Retool. Every Retool customer is a customer of this team.\nIN THIS ROLE YOU'LL:\nDesign, build and manage backend primitives so that users can focus solely on their business logic (e.g. RetoolDB, our managed database solution; and RetoolAI, our built-in framework for wiring LLM interactions into apps and workflows)\nBlend product thinking with API and backend design (e.g. how can we make Kafka event streams intuitive to the user and easy for us to maintain, how can we help a user use Slack without needing to dive into its documentation?)\nDebug customer problems + build features for them (e.g.. \"the Google Sheets integration doesn't support adding rows\", and \"what's the best way to support that? Via cell ranges, or via a lightweight, home-grown ORM?\")\nApply a platform mindset to what you build (e.g.. How can I implement PKCE such that it can easily be reused across all of our Oauth integrations?)\nSupport 20M requests/day via 70+ ways to connect data\nTHE SKILLSET YOU'LL BRING:\n5+ years experience in professional software development, ideally some of which you’ve spent in startups\nExperience owning technically challenging and demanding cross-functional projects\nExperience across the entire stack, from backend to frontend (and if you have a preference, we’d love to hear it!)\nExperience with cloud based infrastructure like Azure, AWS or GCP\nAbility to make technical decisions quickly, while looping in key stakeholders, too\nA customer-first mindset and an interest in talking with customers to make sure what we’re building meets their needs\nHabit of introspection and understanding what’s helped you be successful in the past\nNICE TO HAVE:\nExperience in JavaScript / TypeScript\nExperience building integration platforms or operating a large set of integrations\nFamiliarity with AI/LLM-backed systems (e.g. prompt orchestration, embeddings, vector search), especially as part of a broader platform or product\nBonus points if you have experience in mentoring other team members\nFor candidates based in the United States, the pay range(s) for this role is listed below and represents base salary range for non-commissionable roles or on-target earnings (OTE) for commissionable roles. This salary range may be inclusive of several career levels at Retool and will be narrowed during the interview process based on a number of factors such as (but not limited to), scope and responsibilities, the candidate’s experience and qualifications, and location.\nAdditional compensation in the form(s) of equity and/or commission are dependent on the position offered. Retool provides a comprehensive benefit plan, including medical, dental, vision, and 401(k).
