Rightmove is a Milton Keynes company founded in 2000 that operates the dominant property portal in the United Kingdom. Estate agents pay to list homes on a site that receives the great majority of British property search traffic. The company is a member of the FTSE 100 and runs data and valuation products alongside its listings.

Our vision is to give everyone the belief they can make their move. We aim to make moving simpler, by giving everyone the best place to turn to and return to for access to the tools, expertise, trust, and belief to make it happen.

We’re home to the UK’s largest choice of properties and are the go-to destination for millions of people planning their next move, reading the latest industry news, or just browsing what’s on the market.

Location: London Office / Hybrid (3 days a week working from home)

Reporting to: Engineering Manager

The role

As a Senior Software Engineer I, you will own the delivery of high-quality software and products, able to be deployed frequently and safely into production. Working with similarly minded people, you collaborate with your team to encourage best coding practices. You are an advocate of test automation and have a clear view of where to make the best use of it.

At Rightmove we work as part of autonomous cross-functional teams in an agile environment. Each team owns a part of the Rightmove experience made up of design, product and engineering. You will deliver quality solutions that satisfy millions of users, thousands of agents and hundreds of passionate Rightmovers. You will contribute towards defining solutions to business and technical problems in a way which ensures maintainability, scalability and high performance standards. We work collaboratively across a mix of product and centralised teams, together working towards Rightmove’s strategy.

For a glimpse into the technical make-up of the UKs favourite property portal works, head to our tech blog.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and deliver impactful features across our applications using technologies such as TypeScript, React, Node.js, Express, Kubernetes, and GitLab.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners to solve meaningful problems and build thoughtful, scalable solutions.
  • Contribute actively to sprint planning, helping shape the roadmap and influence feature prioritisation.
  • Participate in engineering forums and initiatives that strengthen our craft and promote continuous improvement.
  • Share knowledge and mentor others, helping to foster an inclusive, supportive culture of learning and growth.
  • Provide clear, considered estimates for user stories to support effective team planning.
  • Engage in constructive code reviews, offering supportive feedback and championing high-quality engineering practices.
  • Explore and advocate for emerging technologies that enhance our platform, developer experience, and ways of working.
  • Work effectively in an Agile environment, embracing collaboration, experimentation, and iterative improvement.

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has proven experience in a user-facing product team, understanding customer needs and the real-world impact of their work.
  • Is passionate about quality, with hands-on experience in TDD and tools like Jest and React Testing Library.
  • Values clean, maintainable code and enjoys discussing different ideas and approaches.
  • Has experience mentoring and supporting other engineers, contributing to an environment where everyone can thrive.
  • May have experience with modern Angular and/or Java; this is a bonus, not a requirement. What matters most is a willingness to work across boundaries and contribute across the stack when needed.
  • Is curious about how users interact with live applications, and motivated to improve performance, usability, and overall experience.
  • Embraces modern technologies and brings a mindset of continuous improvement.
  • Feels comfortable asking questions, sharing ideas, and learning from others in a collaborative team setting.

Our approach to AI:

At Rightmove, we believe software and product are ultimately people problems, and everything we build aims to improve the lives of others. We see AI as a helpful way to create more space for the human side of our work, from understanding real needs to making sure we are solving the right problems in the right way. There is an expectation that you are proactive in exploring how AI can support your own workflow and productivity, and that you approach it with curiosity and an open mind.
