Software Engineer - Mobile (React Native)

Responsibilities:

• Build user-facing features that work reliably on low-end Android phones with intermittent connectivity.
• Translate design and requirements into clean, performant React Native code.
• Own feature quality from development through testing to deployment.
• Optimise for constraints: limited data, low bandwidth, older phones, limited battery.
• Work with the product team to understand farmer needs and iterate quickly.
• Collaborate with backend engineers to design APIs that work in our context.
• Write maintainable code that teammates (now and in the future) can work with confidently.

Requirements:

• 2-4 years developing mobile applications.
• Solid React Native foundation and comfortable shipping features.
• Proven ability to build reusable components and follow best practices.
• Understanding of mobile performance constraints and optimisation.

Technical Requirements Core Skills (Required)

React Native and JavaScript:

• Strong proficiency in React Native (version 0.71+).
• Solid JavaScript fundamentals (ES6+).
• Deep understanding of React principles: hooks, state management, functional components.
• Experience translating designs into high-quality, reusable components.

State Management:

• Proficiency with Redux and Redux-Toolkit.
• Familiarity with Context API and when to use it vs. Redux.
• Understanding of state management patterns and when to apply them.

Libraries and Tools You'll Use:

• TanStack Query (for API data fetching and caching).
• React Navigation or react-native-navigation (mobile app navigation).
• Modern frontend tooling: Babel, Webpack, NPM.
• Git and GitHub for version control.

APIs and Authentication:

• Experience consuming RESTful APIs.
• Understanding of modern authentication (JSON Web Tokens, OAuth patterns).
• Ability to work with API documentation and communicate with backend teams.

Mobile Development Specifics:

• Understanding of mobile-specific constraints: performance, memory, battery, connectivity.
• Experience optimising components for performance across a range of devices.
• Familiarity with mobile app navigation patterns.
• Basic understanding of native modules and when you need them.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

• React JS experience (web React helps understand core concepts).
• Java or Spring Boot backend experience (helps understand server-side constraints).
• Experience with offline-first or low-connectivity scenarios.
• Familiarity with app performance monitoring tools.
• Experience with Expo (we may or may not use it).
• Experience deploying to app stores.
