You will play a key role in designing, developing, and improving mechanical systems and equipment that support RMS Energy’s customers and field operations.\nThis position offers the opportunity to take your engineering expertise beyond the desk and see your work make a direct impact in the field.\nYou’ll collaborate closely with engineering, operations, field personnel, and project teams to develop practical, reliable, and cost-effective solutions while maintaining high standards for safety, quality, and performance. From concept through implementation, you’ll solve real-world engineering challenges and help ensure projects are successfully delivered on time.\nWhat You’ll Do:\nDevelop mechanical designs for LV and MV switchgear retrofit and retro-fill applications, including replacement breakers, compartments, cell structures, bus interfaces, mounting systems, shutters, barriers, doors, and related components.\nReview existing switchgear designs, drawings, photographs, field measurements, bills of material, and customer documentation to determine retrofit feasibility and develop replacement solutions.\nCreate detailed 3D models, assemblies, and 2D manufacturing drawings using CAD software.\nDesign mechanical interfaces between new equipment and existing/legacy switchgear.\nPerform dimensional analysis, tolerance stack-ups, fit-up evaluations, and interference checks to ensure successful installation and operation.\nDevelop designs that account for manufacturability, serviceability, installation, structural integrity, clearances, and applicable industry standards.\nWork with electrical engineers to coordinate bus, conductor sizing, breaker control, protection and maintain insulation integrity.\nReview legacy drawings and reverse-engineer existing equipment when necessary.\nParticipate in design reviews and provide technical recommendations for challenging retrofit applications.\nSupport prototype builds, first-article inspections, testing, troubleshooting, and field installation activities.\nInvestigate design issues and implement corrective actions when problems are identified during fabrication, assembly, testing, or installation.\nGenerate and maintain engineering documentation, including drawings, bills of material, specifications, engineering change documentation, and design calculations.\nCollaborate with suppliers and field service personnel to resolve fabrication and assembly issues.\nPerform engineering calculations, analysis, and evaluations to support projects and equipment improvements.\nSupport the selection, specification, and evaluation of mechanical equipment, materials, and components.\nParticipate in project planning, estimating, scheduling, and implementation as needed.\nConduct inspections, testing, and evaluations of equipment and systems.\nIdentify opportunities to improve equipment reliability, efficiency, safety, and performance.\nEnsure engineering designs and recommendations comply with applicable codes, standards, and company requirements, such as IEEE C37, IEEE/IEC 62271-37 and UL891\nPerform other duties and special projects as assigned.\nThe Experience We’re Looking For:\nBachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related engineering discipline\n5+ years of professional mechanical engineering experience, preferably with significant experience in electrical distribution equipment, switchgear, switchboards, breakers, or related power equipment.\nDemonstrated experience with mechanical system design, analysis, troubleshooting, and problem-solving\nAbility to read, interpret, and develop engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation\nStrong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook)\nExperience with SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar CAD platforms\nExperience with low voltage and medium voltage electronic distribution systems\nStrong collaboration skills, able to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams to support project delivery\nEmploy professional and effective communication in dealing with internal and external stakeholders\nDemonstrated organizational and time-management skills; able to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines with guidance from leadership\nSelf-driven and exhibits the ability to work with minimal supervision\nAdditional Requirements:\nValid and current driver’s license with a clean driving record\nMust successfully complete a background check and pre-employment/random drug tests\nWilling and able to travel frequently (15%), including overnight stays\nMust be flexible to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and nights as needed\nAbility to work remotely and stay self-directed in day-to-day responsibilities\nBonus Points for:\nDirect experience with low-voltage and/or medium-voltage distribution-class switchgear.\nExperience with ANSI/IEEE switchgear, circuit breakers, switchboards, MCCs, non-seg bus, or related electrical distribution equipment.\nExperience designing retrofit solutions for legacy or obsolete switchgear equipment.\nFamiliarity with electrical clearances, creepage distances, insulation systems, bus structures, and mechanical requirements associated with LV/MV equipment.\nExperience with sheet metal, machined components, copper bus, structural components, and other fabrication methods commonly used in switchgear.\nFamiliarity with engineering standards and practices applicable to electrical distribution equipment.\nExperience supporting manufacturing, testing, commissioning, or field installation of electrical equipment.\nWhy Join RMS Energy:\nWe’re not just another power services company.
