Senior Data Scientist, Engine Infra

WHY DATA SCIENCE & ANALYTICS?

The Data Science & Analytics organization's mission is to increase our speed, frequency and acumen of making decisions at scale by instilling a data-influenced approach to building products. We cover a wide area of the data spectrum including analytical data engineering, product analytics, experimentation, causal inference, statistical modeling and machine learning. Aligned and partnering with product verticals, we use this extensive tool belt to discover new opportunities and unmet use cases, influence and shape the product roadmap and prioritization, build data products and measure impact on our community of players and developers.

WHY ENGINE INFRA?

Engine Infra  team is responsible for the game-server fleet that simulates live experiences - making it efficient, observable, and reliable on Roblox edge infrastructure and regional cloud capacity, from multiplexing and ARM bursting through telemetry, resource allocation, and edge latency.

You Will:

• Define Metrics - Own Engine Infra metrics, telemetry logging, and validation for the RCC fleet and edge compute. Establish KPIs for game-server efficiency, reliability, and player experience - including CPU and memory, heartbeat, occupancy and multiplexing efficiency, crash and OOM rates, runtime error codes, and latency quality (e.g. DataPing vs RakPing) that directly affect creators and players.
• Transform & Visualize Data for Actionable Insights - Access and process raw RCC and engine telemetry, build analytics pipelines, and deliver clear operating views of the fleet. Turn per-instance, per-game, datacenter, and channel signals into dashboards and decision systems that help Engine Infra pack more players onto fewer cores, allocate CPU and memory correctly, and keep multiplexed and large-server processes healthy.
• Design Experiments & Apply Causal Inference - Lead channel tests, hardware A/Bs, and causal analyses for multiplexing, ARM64 bursting, regional capacity, and edge latency. Measure trade-offs among efficiency, stability, and quality; separate host, container, engine, content, and release effects; and estimate player-experience impact (including latency-sensitive cohorts, not only global averages) so launches ship on evidence.
• Drive Cross-Functional Collaboration - Partner with Engine Infra, Game Engine, Networking, Matchmaking, Infrastructure, Product, and TPMs, and with teams such as Creator Analytics and Growth, to debug ambiguous production issues and open new capacity and quality opportunities.
• Shape the Future of Roblox’s Foundation - Influence how Roblox runs live experiences on owned edge and cloud hardware - a more efficient RCC fleet, better regional capacity, lower edge latency, and a platform that stays interactive as we scale toward larger, denser servers.

You Have:

• Advanced degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, or a related field with a focus on large-scale system analysis.
• 4+ years as a Data Scientist, with a proven track record of working on high-volume telemetry, product quality optimization.
• Expertise in processing massive, noisy datasets (like crash logs or telemetry pings) and building scalable pipelines for reporting.
• Experience using first-principles reasoning to debug complex, ambiguous system failures that don't always have a clear cause.
• Experience presenting deep technical results to Engineering leaders and using data storytelling to prioritize work and future investment.

Nice to Have:

• Direct experience with game engines or systems performance 
• Experience in game development or working on real-time interactive systems
• A background or interest in memory management, OS-level interactions, or network stack optimization.

For roles that are based at our headquarters in San Mateo, CA: The starting base pay for this position is as shown below. The actual base pay is dependent upon a variety of job-related factors such as professional background, training, work experience, location, business needs and market demand. Therefore, in some circumstances, the actual salary could fall outside of this expected range. This pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. All full-time employees are also eligible for equity compensation and for benefits as described on this page.

Annual Salary Range

$221,380—$263,670 USD

Roles that are based in an office are onsite Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with optional presence on Monday and Friday (unless otherwise noted).
