JD103 - Sensor R&D Engineer (GNSS Focus)
Description
Hardware Development Engineer (Sensor R&D - GNSS & System Planning Focus)
About the role
We are looking for a Hardware Development Engineer (Sensor R&D - GNSS & System Planning Focus) to join our Hardware & Integration team.
This role combines strong expertise in GNSS/INS positioning systems with system-level sensor planning and validation for autonomous driving vehicles.
You will be responsible for evaluating, selecting, integrating, and troubleshooting GNSS/INS solutions, while proactively designing and validating overall sensor configurations based on autonomous driving system requirements.
We value independent analytical thinking, the ability to identify problems and propose solutions, curiosity about unfamiliar technologies, and a collaborative spirit.
Why this role matters
Autonomous driving performance depends on reliable positioning and well-designed sensor configurations.
This role ensures that GNSS/INS systems deliver accurate and stable positioning, while the overall sensor architecture provides sufficient coverage, accuracy, redundancy, and reliability to meet autonomous driving requirements.
Rather than simply implementing predefined requirements, you will actively identify system needs, propose sensor solutions, and validate their effectiveness through analysis and real-vehicle testing.
Key responsibilities
- Take ownership of GNSS/INS sensor selection, integration, performance evaluation, and troubleshooting, including GNSS receivers, RTK systems, IMUs, antennas, and related hardware.
- Analyze GNSS/INS performance, including positioning accuracy, availability, stability, RTK correction quality, INS alignment, and performance under GNSS-degraded conditions.
- Understand autonomous driving system requirements and proactively define overall sensor configurations, including sensor types, quantities, specifications, placement, and redundancy.
- Design and optimize sensor layouts for cameras, LiDAR, radar, GNSS/IMU, and other sensors, considering coverage, occlusion, mounting, power, communication, synchronization, and environmental constraints.
- Develop and execute sensor evaluation and validation plans, including performance benchmarks, bench testing, vehicle testing, and data analysis.
- Identify sensor performance gaps and system-level risks, propose improvements, and verify their effectiveness through testing.
- Troubleshoot sensor, communication, synchronization, positioning, and hardware-software integration issues, coordinating root cause analysis with internal teams and suppliers.
- Drive sensor development and continuous improvement throughout prototyping, vehicle deployment, and field testing.
Who we’re looking for
Requirements
- Hands-on experience with GNSS/RTK and GNSS/INS positioning systems, including integration, performance evaluation, and troubleshooting.
- Solid understanding of GNSS positioning principles, RTK correction mechanisms, IMU characteristics, and GNSS/INS integrated navigation.
- Ability to independently plan and design overall sensor configurations based on autonomous driving or robotics system requirements.
- Experience with sensor evaluation and validation, including defining test plans, analyzing results, and identifying performance limitations.
- Familiarity with automotive or robotics sensors such as cameras, LiDAR, radar, GNSS, and IMUs.
- Ability to analyze and troubleshoot sensor, network, synchronization, and hardware-software integration issues.
- Working proficiency in at least two of the following languages:
Chinese, Japanese, and English.
Preferred
- Experience designing sensor architectures or layouts for autonomous driving or ADAS vehicles.
- Experience evaluating GNSS/INS performance through real-vehicle testing and post-processing.
- Familiarity with RTK correction services, NTRIP, and GNSS post-processing tools.
- Experience with GNSS/INS products from NovAtel, Applanix, Septentrio, or similar suppliers.
- Understanding of sensor coverage analysis, redundancy, and system-level performance evaluation.
- Working knowledge of Linux, networking, and time synchronization (NTP/PTP).
- Basic Python or Bash scripting experience for testing, automation, and data analysis.
- Hands-on experience with antennas, RF cables, connectors, wiring, and vehicle hardware integration.
