You will define system architectures, lead implementation of scalable AI platforms, and guide teams through the full lifecycle of AI development, from experimentation and model iteration to secure, observable production deployment. \nAs a Level 4 leader, you are expected to own complex AI systems end-to-end, influence technical direction, mentor engineers, and make principled architectural tradeoffs under real-world constraints. \nKey Responsibilities \nAI Architecture & Technical Strategy \nDefine AI system architecture aligned to business objectives and long-term scalability \nTranslate ambiguous AI opportunities into structured technical approaches \nDesign modular, extensible AI platforms supporting experimentation and production workloads \nEstablish architecture decision records (ADRs) and technical documentation standards \nAI System Design & Implementation \nLead design and implementation of ML systems, model services, and inference pipelines \nBuild scalable training, evaluation, and deployment workflows \nArchitect data ingestion, feature engineering, and model serving strategies \nEnsure reliability, observability, and performance optimization of AI systems \nAI Platform & Infrastructure \nDesign and implement end-to-end AI pipelines and agentic orchestration frameworks. \nEstablish LLMOps best practices including CI/CD, prompt versioning, and real-time model observability. \nOptimize distributed inference systems and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) performance. \nEnsure AI infrastructure aligns with security, compliance, and GPU/token cost-efficiency standards. \nResearch-to-Production Acceleration \nBridge research and engineering by operationalizing prototypes into production-ready systems \nDefine evaluation metrics, validation processes, and rollout strategies \nImprove iteration velocity through tooling and automation \nTechnical Leadership & Mentorship \nMentor junior and mid-level AI engineers \nLead code reviews and enforce engineering standards \nGuide teams in making informed tradeoffs across performance, scalability, cost, and complexity \nContribute to shared AI best practices and internal accelerators \nCross-Functional Collaboration \nPartner with product, engineering, and executive stakeholders to shape AI roadmaps \nCommunicate technical strategy and system tradeoffs clearly to non-technical audiences \nAlign AI initiatives with business value and measurable outcomes \nRequired Skills & Qualifications \n5+ years of experience in AI/ML engineering or applied machine learning \nProven experience designing and deploying production AI systems \nStrong software engineering background (Python or similar) \nExperience with distributed systems and scalable data architectures \nDeep understanding of MLOps, model lifecycle management, and AI infrastructure \nExperience building and maintaining ML pipelines and automated deployment workflows \nStrong problem-solving skills and architectural judgment \nDemonstrated leadership and mentoring experience \nExcellent communication skills for technical and executive stakeholders \nNice to Have \nExperience with generative AI, LLM systems, or retrieval-augmented architectures \nExposure to multi-agent or agentic AI systems \nExperience with cloud-based AI platforms and infrastructure-as-code \nBackground in consulting or professional services environments \nExperience designing AI systems in regulated or security-sensitive domains \nHands-on AWS experience supporting cloud-native or AI/ML production systems. \nAWS certifications (Associate or Professional level) or equivalent practical AWS expertise. \nPersonal Competencies \nArchitectural Thinking - Designs systems that scale and evolve \nTechnical Ownership - Drives AI initiatives from concept to production \nEngineering Rigor - Prioritizes reliability, observability, and maintainability \nMentorship - Elevates team capability through guidance and example \nExecution Focus - Delivers production-ready systems, not just prototypes \nComfort in Ambiguity - Translates unclear AI challenges into structured solutions \nWhy Join Robots & Pencils? \nAt Robots & Pencils, we build intelligent systems for real-world environments, blending creativity, engineering excellence, and applied AI to help organizations work smarter.
