Roche is a Swiss healthcare group founded in Basel in 1896 and is unusual in operating two large divisions of comparable importance: prescription medicines and in vitro diagnostics. The pharmaceutical business is built on oncology, neurology, immunology, ophthalmology and haemophilia, with products such as Ocrevus, Hemlibra, Perjeta and Vabysmo, while the diagnostics division supplies laboratory analysers, molecular tests and sequencing systems to hospitals worldwide. The group owns the American biotechnology company Genentech outright and the Japanese firm Chugai in majority, is controlled by a family shareholder pool, and spends among the largest research budgets in the industry.

At Roche you can show up as yourself, embraced for the unique qualities you bring. Our culture encourages personal expression, open dialogue, and genuine connections, where you are valued, accepted and respected for who you are, allowing you to thrive both personally and professionally. This is how we aim to prevent, stop and cure diseases and ensure everyone has access to healthcare today and for generations to come. Join Roche, where every voice matters.

The Position

A healthcare pioneer and the industry’s global leader in in-vitro diagnostics, the Diagnostics Division pushes boundaries and challenges the status quo to redefine what’s possible. Our commitment to research and development means we can bring to the market integrated solutions in diagnostic testing, laboratory efficiency, healthcare digitalization, and decision support tools and software. Our products deliver increasingly precise information to help save lives, prevent or control the risk of infection, and monitor treatment effectiveness.

At Sensor and Reagent Development BGE, we are at the forefront of innovation in the healthcare industry. Banking on the technical expertise and know-how of our skilled and dedicated team of scientists and engineers, we design and develop sensors and reagents for blood gas and electrolyte (BGE) analyzers. Our products are essential for accurate and reliable patient diagnostics, impacting lives every day.

The Opportunity

In this internship, you will drive an exploratory feasibility project to evaluate novel oxygen scavenging strategies for next-generation blood gas reagent formulations. The project focuses on different innovative pathways such as small organic molecule scavengers, storage-stable enzymatic systems, and functional multilayer packaging foils.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Organic Scavenger Screening & Electrochemistry: Identify and evaluate small organic molecules (e.g., food additives, antioxidants) to determine oxygen depletion kinetics while analyzing electrochemical behavior to minimize potential sensor interference.

  • Enzymatic Scavenger Systems: Assess and validate enzyme-based systems for their feasibility and performance as effective oxygen scavengers.

  • Functional Packaging & Materials Evaluation: Investigate active scavenging polymer laminates and pouch foils, conducting thorough leachables and extractables testing to safeguard sensor and reagent stability.

  • Analytical Testing & Characterization: Apply advanced electrochemical, spectroscopic, and chromatographic methods to measure oxygen consumption rates and characterize matrix interactions.

  • Data Analysis & Documentation: Synthesize experimental results, assess formulation and material viability, and present clear technical summaries and recommendations to the cross-functional R&D team.

Who You Are

  • You are currently enrolled in, or have graduated from, a Master’s degree program (or equivalent advanced studies) in Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field within the last 12 months prior to your start date.

  • You are eager to gain practical industry experience in a dynamic laboratory setting. Furthermore, You have:

  • Strong theoretical and practical foundation in organic chemistry and wet-lab chemical formulation (Required).

  • Sound knowledge of enzymes, enzyme kinetics, and biochemical reaction mechanisms (Required).

  • High degree of self-organization, analytical problem-solving skills, and a structured approach to experimental design (Required).

  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities in English (Required).

  • Interest or experience in electrochemistry (e.g., oxidation potentials, electrode interactions) or analytical techniques (e.g., UV/Vis spectrophotometry, fluorescence assays) (Preferred).

  • Basic understanding of or curiosity about packaging materials, active foils, and leachables/extractables testing (Preferred).

Application process:

  • Please upload a current CV and a Motivation Letter.

Additional Information:

  • Due to regulations, non-EU/EFTA citizens must be actively enrolled for the entire duration of the internship and provide an official university certificate stating that the internship is a mandatory part of their studies.

  • This internship position is located in Rotkreuz, Switzerland, on-site.

  • The start date for the internship is from mid- November /December 2026 with a duration of 6 months.

  • Part-time employment and writing a thesis during the internship is not possible.
