Job Description

Position Summary:

Rockwell Automation is building machine vision and visual inspection into the Automation Control Software portfolio, alongside Studio 5000 Logix Designer and FactoryTalk Optix. You will own the edge - the software running on the box in the plant that drives multiple cameras, executes inspection at line rate, talks to a Logix controller, and stays up when the network does not.

This is deep systems work with architectural ownership. Multi-camera pipelines, the edge-to-cloud channel, the control interface timing budget, and the tradeoff between what runs locally and what runs in the cloud are all yours to shape.

You will build in an AI-first engineering environment - coding agents running inside a harness we own, evals gating AI-generated changes, GitHub Copilot Enterprise and Claude in the daily loop, and MCP-based tooling that lets agents reach real build, test, and telemetry systems under human-in-the-loop review. You will help define what 'good' means for AI-written code in a system where a missed frame is a missed defect.

This role will have a remote schedule and will report to the Director, Software Engineering.

Your Responsibilities:

• Own the architecture of the edge runtime: process model, camera pipeline, inference scheduling, and resource budgets.
• Design and maintain the edge-to-cloud communication layer, including reconnection, buffering, and behavior under degraded networks.
• Own the control interface between inspection results and the PLC, including timing and determinism requirements.
• Drive performance work - throughput, latency, and memory - against real multi-camera production loads.
• Simplify and consolidate the edge codebase, and set the standard for how it is structured and tested.
• Act as a recognized technical resource across the product for edge and systems design decisions.
• Partner with DevOps on provisioning, update, and rollback for edge devices in the field.

The Essentials - You Will Have:

• Bachelor's Degree or equivalent years of relevant work experience.
• Legal authorization to work in the US is required. We will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.

The Preferred - You Might Also Have:

• Typically requires 8+ years of related experience in a software product development environment.
• Bachelor's or advanced degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
• Experience architecting and shipping systems software that runs on constrained or embedded targets
• Experience owning performance and reliability for a real-time or near-real-time system
• Depth in C++, Rust, Go, or Python for systems-level work on Linux.
• Experience with containerized or immutable Linux deployments on edge hardware.
• Experience with camera, sensor, or other high-rate device interfaces and pipelines.
• Experience with industrial control interfaces - PLC, EtherNet/IP, OPC UA, or equivalent fieldbus protocols.
• Experience with edge-to-cloud messaging patterns and behavior under intermittent connectivity.
• Track record simplifying an inherited codebase and measurably improving its performance.

This position is part of a job family. Experience will be the determining factor for position level and compensation.

For this role, the Base Salary Compensation is from $139,680.00 - 209,520.00 USD with an annual target bonus of 8% of base salary. Our company benefits for the US can be found here. Actual pay will be based on factors such as skills, knowledge, education, and experience.
