The Senior Communications Specialist will play an integral role conceptualizing and developing compelling material - to help our clients tell impactful and cohesive stories. As a critical member of the creative team supporting the Naval Surface Warfare Center Code 103 Corporate Communications team in Dahlgren, VA., the Senior Communications Specialist will be required to develop and edit written products including magazine and news articles, press releases and fact sheets that clearly relay key messages, purposes and plans and adhere to requirements for internal and external audiences. The Senior Communications Specialist will also provide editorial guidance to subordinate organizations’ communications staff on written news articles in accordance with AP style guidelines. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker with superior editorial and fact-checking skills. Candidates must have an active SECRET security clearance.\nRequirements\nResponsibilities:\nTask, lead, and collaborate with others to create original concepts that result in effective and compelling internal and external communication\nWrite clear, concise, grammatically correct copy that is consistent with approved brand, voice and style\nProvide editorial expertise in producing catalogs, electronic newsletters and magazine-type publications\nProvide photography in support of articles and social media\na clear understanding of social media support to include developing posts and understanding the impact of posts via a data drive evaluation\nManage administrative requirements and requests for information \nProactively create action plans to target the correct audience and use sound editorial judgment to determine where communication gaps exist and how to close them\nPerform final document quality assurance and quality control reviews on communication products prior to distribution to the public (e.g., press releases, informational brochures, briefings)\nConsult relevant information sources to obtain and verify background information\nDevelop outlines and drafts that meet client requirements and regulations\nEdit copy to comply with in-house and AP style guides\nPerform other duties as required\nLocal travel may be required\nQualifications\nBachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, public affairs, or related degree OR a minimum six (6) years of related experience in editing documents working in a military/engineering/technical/research, development, or testing environment\nUS Citizen\nActive Secret Clearance\nProven ability to support communication programs and products, media relations programs, community relations, special events, and photography support\nExperience in research, conducting interviews, writing, editing, and obtaining release/approval for articles, feature stories, news releases, and statements, including electronic, web based, and hard copy material\nProficient in Newport Enterprise Realtime Development Server (NERDS) digital signage, Adobe Creative Cloud Production Premium, Microsoft Office Professional, AVS Video Converter, and screen capture software.\nKnowledge of Section 508 compliance standards and how to create products that adhere to these standards \nThorough knowledge of AP Style\nExceptional writer and copy editor\nExcellent interpersonal and communication skills\nStrong organizational skills, attention to detail and self-motivation\nAbility to function in a face-paced and deadline-driven
