We define ourselves through our superior execution on behalf of our clients, which has established us as a leader in the industry.\nPosition Summary\nThe Commercial Binding Authority Underwriter is responsible for evaluating, pricing, and managing a portfolio of commercial insurance business while building strong relationships with broker partners and driving profitable growth.This role will underwrite new and renewal business within established authority, evaluate exposures and coverage needs, and make sound risk selection and pricing decisions. The Underwriter will also actively manage their broker relationships and production pipeline, identify opportunities to grow the portfolio, and collaborate across the team to develop solutions that appropriately address insureds' risks.\nThe ideal candidate brings strong commercial underwriting fundamentals, experience working within binding authority, and the ability to balance technical underwriting discipline with a relationship-driven, production-oriented approach.\nWhat will your job entail?\nUnderwriting & Risk Selection\nEvaluate, price, and underwrite new business, renewals, and endorsements in accordance with underwriting guidelines and assigned authority.\nAnalyze individual risks to determine appropriate classification, exposures, premium basis, pricing, coverage forms, and endorsements.\nApply appropriate credits and debits to develop sustainable, risk-appropriate pricing.\nReview inspection reports and other available information to assess risk quality and validate exposures.\nIntegrate relevant internal and external information into underwriting decisions.\nIdentify risks requiring additional review and follow established referral guidelines.\nMaintain clear and accurate documentation of underwriting decisions and rationale.\nEnsure policies, endorsements, and other transactions are processed accurately and timely.\nPortfolio & Broker Management\nActively manage an assigned portfolio with a focus on underwriting quality, retention, and profitable growth.\nBuild and maintain strong relationships with assigned brokers, customers, and other business partners.\nClearly communicate quotes, coverage terms, conditions, and underwriting requirements to broker partners.\nEstablish and actively manage a pipeline of new business opportunities.\nConduct stewardship meetings and participate in marketing activities, broker meetings, and industry events.\nIdentify opportunities to strengthen existing relationships and expand production with key broker partners.\nCollaboration\nPartner with fellow underwriters and other team members to develop a comprehensive understanding of insured exposures and appropriate coverage solutions.\nShare market and broker insights that support portfolio and business development strategies.\nContribute to a collaborative, solutions-oriented underwriting environment focused on disciplined growth.\nWhat We’re Looking For\nEducation & Experience\nBachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Risk Management, Insurance, or a related discipline preferred; equivalent relevant experience will also be considered.\n5+ years of commercial insurance underwriting experience, including experience with Binding Authority business preferred.\nCandidates with a Master’s degree and at least 3 years of relevant underwriting experience may also be considered.\nDemonstrated experience evaluating risk, determining appropriate coverage and pricing, and managing an underwriting portfolio.\nExperience developing and maintaining productive broker relationships.\nWorking knowledge of commercial insurance policy language, coverage forms, endorsements, and rating methodologies.\nLicenses & Certifications\nApplicable state Property & Casualty and/or Surplus Lines licenses, as required.\nCIC and/or CPCU designation preferred.\nSkills & Capabilities\nCommercial risk evaluation and selection\nBinding authority underwriting\nPricing and exposure analysis\nPortfolio management\nPolicy language and coverage analysis\nBroker relationship management\nNew business development and marketing\nPipeline management\nData-informed decision making\nClear written and verbal communication\nPresentation and relationship-building skills\nStrong organization and time management\nAbility to work collaboratively across underwriting disciplines\nRyan Specialty is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
