This role provides leadership for financial controls, accounting processes, project accounting support, cash management, and compliance activities within a project-based engineering consulting environment.\nThe Financial Controller works closely with operational leaders, project managers, and corporate finance teams to support business performance, maintain strong internal controls, and provide financial insights that support strategic decision-making. This role will work closely with the Managing Principal of MEP Operations to provide meaningful information about financial performance.\nKey Responsibilities\nProject Accounting & Revenue Recognition\nLead project accounting activities across engineering and consulting projects.\nEnsure accurate project setup, budgeting, billing, and closeout processes.\nVerify compliance with project-based revenue recognition standards and company policies.\nPerform detailed reviews of project accruals, unbilled revenue, work-in-progress (WIP), and deferred revenue balances.\nExamine project fees, profitability, backlog and pipeline data to validate accuracy.\nPartner with project managers to improve project financial performance and billing efficiency.\nFinancial Reporting & Month-End Close\nLead the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.\nEnsure accurate and timely preparation of financial statements and management reports.\nReview and approve journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial analyses.\nMaintain the integrity of the general ledger and supporting schedules.\nCoordinate year-end audit activities and liaise with external auditors.\nAccounting Operations\nOversee all accounting functions, including:\nGeneral Accounting, including reconciliations\nAccounts Payable\nAccounts Receivable\nBilling\nFixed Assets\nCash Management\nPayroll support\nTax support\nEnsure compliance with accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.\nMonitor accounting transactions to ensure accuracy and completeness.\nFinancial Planning & Analysis Support\nPrepare annual budgets and regular billing projections and forecasts.\nAnalyze financial results and explain variances against budget and forecast. \nProduce and monitor key performance indicators, including:\nRevenue\nGross margin\nUtilization\nEBITDA\nDSO (Days Sales Outstanding)\nProject profitability\nWorking capital metrics\nProvide management with actionable financial insights and recommendations.\nCash Flow & Working Capital Management\nMonitor cash flow, collections, and accounts receivable performance.\nSupport forecasting of short- and long-term cash requirements.\nWork with project and business leaders to reduce aged receivables and improve cash conversion.\nReview client billing processes to ensure timely invoicing and collections.\nInternal Controls & Compliance\nMaintain a strong internal control environment.\nEnsure compliance with accounting standards, tax regulations, and company policies.\nSupport annual corporate tax filings and indirect tax compliance (GST/HST, provincial requirements).\nAssist with risk management, insurance reporting, and contractual compliance activities.\nImplement corrective actions identified through audits or control reviews.\nSystems & Process Improvement\nIdentify opportunities to improve efficiency through automation and standardization.\nSupport ERP system enhancements and finance transformation initiatives.\nDevelop and maintain financial dashboards and reporting tools.\nPromote continuous improvement across finance and accounting processes.\nTeam Leadership\nSupervise and mentor accounting team members.\nEstablish performance goals and development plans.\nFoster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and customer service.\nSupport recruitment, onboarding, and succession planning activities.\nQualifications\nEducation\nBachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or related field.\nCPA designation (CPA Canada) preferred\nSkills and Experience\n8-12 years of progressive accounting experience.\nMinimum 3-5 years in a leadership or supervisory role.\nExperience within engineering consulting, architecture, construction services, professional services, or other project-based industries preferred.\nExperience managing full-cycle accounting and financial reporting activities.\nPrevious experience supporting external audits and internal control programs.\nAbility to work in both English and French preferred.\nTechnical Knowledge\nStrong working knowledge of:\nIFRS and/or ASPE\nProject accounting\nRevenue recognition\nFinancial reporting\nInternal controls\nBudgeting and forecasting\nAdvanced Excel skills.\nExperience with ERP systems such as Deltek achievements.\nCompensation\nThe expected base salary range for this position is $145,000 - $175,000 CAD and eligible for a performance bonus.\nActual compensation will be based on relevant
