Here, you’ll have an opportunity to be part of a global leader whose innovative designs are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible and powering the future. \nWe believe innovation and growth are driven by an inclusive culture and a diverse workforce. We’re dedicated to empowering people to be their true selves. Together, we’re building a better tomorrow for our employees, customers, partners, and communities.\nWhat You’ll Learn\nProject Overview: Develop systems software for memory and storage pools that support reinforcement-learning post-training of large language models\nSkills You’ll Learn:Core Linux kernel memory management for virtual machines\nHow to modify the Linux kernel memory/storage management subsystem\nContributing to the largest open source project in the world\nUnderstand how open-source SW impacts Samsung business\nCollaborating across team, Samsung, and industry\n\nWhat You’ll Do\nThe Samsung Global Ecosystem Team (GOST) is seeking an intern to develop systems software for memory and storage pools that support reinforcement-learning post-training of large language models. The work will examine how rollout generation, reward evaluation, policy updates, and checkpoint recovery use shared resources. You will build a focused prototype using fabric-attached memory and SSD pool, and measure its effect on training progress, memory pressure, and recovery time.\nGOST consists of a geographically distributed group of engineers making high impact contributions both in software and leadership to open ecosystems such as the Linux kernel and QEMU. This work supports Samsung’s latest storage and memory technologies.\nAs an intern, you will contribute to the SW ecosystem R&D efforts targeting Samsung’s latest memory and storage technologies globally through distributed open-source projects. The goal of the internship is to deliver a working memory-to-storage data path, a live RL post-training demonstration, and a measured explanation of when pooling improves training efficiency or recoverability.\nLocation: Daily onsite presence at our San Jose headquarters in alignment with our Flexible Work policy\nReports to: Principal Engineer\nResponsibilities\nProfile the RL post-training loop to identify memory-capacity limits, data-transfer overhead, storage stalls, and GPU idle time.\nDevelop one runtime feature that coordinates bounded memory staging, asynchronous storage writes, prefetching, or capacity allocation across workers.\nIntegrate the feature with an existing RL framework using its training and checkpoint interfaces.\nPreserve snapshot consistency, policy-version provenance, buffer ownership, and durable checkpoint publication during asynchronous operations.\nCompare memory-only, storage-only, and combined pool configurations using training throughput, GPU-hours, local-memory usage, and restart performance.\nDeliver correctness tests, reproducible experiments, design documentation, and code suitable for review and potential open-source contribution.\nFind the resource management issue on post-RL workload and resolve the issue in host OS.\nComplete other responsibilities as assigned.\nComplete other responsibilities as assigned.\n\nWhat You Bring\nPursuing Masters, or PhD in Computer Science\nMust have at least 1 academic quarter/semester remaining\nProgramming experience in C, C++, or Rust, with Python or shell scripting for experiments and automation.\nUnderstanding of operating systems, memory management, concurrency, and computer architecture.\nExperience developing and debugging on Linux, using Git, and communicating technical results-coursework and research projects count.\nCXL, NUMA, Device-DAX, mmap, shared-memory programming, or memory allocators, preferred\nGPU programming, CUDA, DMA, or profiling memory and data-transfer performance, preferred\nDistributed systems, cache management, vllm, sglang, LLM inference, or open-source development, preferred\nYou’re inclusive, adapting your style to the situation and diverse global norms of our people.\nAn avid learner, you approach challenges with curiosity and resilience, seeking data to help build understanding.\nYou’re collaborative, building relationships, humbly offering support and openly welcoming approaches.\nInnovative and creative, you proactively explore new ideas and adapt quickly to change.\nWhat We Offer\n The pay range below is for all roles at this level across all US locations and functions. Pay within this range varies by work location and may also depend on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.\nThis is in addition to our diverse package of benefits centered around the wellbeing of our employees and their loved ones. In addition to the usual Medical/Dental/Vision, our inclusive rewards plan empowers our people to care for their whole selves. An investment in your future is an investment in ours.\nRelocation Support Live 50+ miles away from your new office? No worries! We'll provide a stipend to help support your move.\nHousing Stipend Signing a lease on a new place for your summer internship? We'll help you pay your way with a monthly stipend.\nGive Back With a charitable giving match and frequent opportunities to get involved, we take an active role in supporting the community.\nPrioritize Emotional Wellness With on-demand apps and paid therapy sessions, you’ll have support no matter where you are.\nStay Fit Eating well and being active are important parts of a healthy life. Our onsite Café and gym, plus virtual classes, make it easier.\nEmbrace Flexibility Benefits are best when you have the space to use them. That’s why we facilitate a flexible environment so you can find the right balance for you.\nHourly Base Pay Rate\n$28—$68 USD\nEqual Opportunity Employment Policy \nSamsung Semiconductor takes pride in being an equal opportunity workplace dedicated to fostering an environment where all individuals feel valued and empowered to excel, regardless of race, religion, color, age, disability, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, ancestry, genetic information, marital status, national origin, political affiliation, or veteran status.\nWhen selecting team members, we prioritize talent and qualities such as humility, kindness, and dedication.
