This role establishes the build strategy and detailed work instructions that govern structural fabrication and assembly, and ensures secondary structure and foundations are installed and welded at the correct stage of construction.\nShipbuilding depends on a well-sequenced structural build strategy to control distortion, maintain fairness, and avoid rework as assemblies grow in size and complexity. The Manufacturing Engineer ensures breakdown strategy, fit-up sequence, and secondary structure integration are planned correctly so outfitting trades are never blocked by structure that wasn't ready.\nThis role works closely with design engineering, piping, electrical, HVAC, and outfitting planning teams, as well as production and facilities, to build a structural plan the yard can actually execute.\nResponsibilities\nBuild Strategy & Breakdown Planning\nDevelop the build strategy breaking the hull into its construction hierarchy: parts, panels/subassemblies, units/blocks, grand blocks, and erected hull.\nDefine breakdown (block boundary) locations based on facility constraints, crane/transport capacity, access, and weld/outfitting sequence.\nSpecify fit-up, alignment, and weld sequence at each level of assembly to control distortion and accuracy.\nFabrication & Erection Work Instructions\nDevelop work instructions for fabrication (cutting, forming, fit-up) and assembly (panel line, sub-block, unit, and block erection).\nPlan and sequence erection joints, including butt and seam welding at block-to-block connections, to maintain hull fairness.\nDefine temporary supports, strongbacks, and fairing aids used during assembly.\nSecondary Structure & Outfit Integration\nPlan how secondary structure (foundations, brackets, stiffeners, ladders, gratings, coamings) is installed and welded at the correct build stage.\nCoordinate with piping, electrical, HVAC, and outfitting planning to ensure foundations and penetrations are ready when those systems need them.\nIdentify and resolve interferences and sequencing conflicts between primary structure, secondary structure, and outfitting.\nProduction Support & Continuous Improvement\nSupport first-article and lead-unit builds, walking the work with fitters, welders, and leads.\nRefine work instructions and standard work based on floor feedback and build performance data.\nMaintain structural planning documentation and standards across the program.\nWhat Success Looks Like\nBlocks and units fit and erect correctly with minimal rework or fairing corrections.\nSecondary structure and foundations are in place before outfitting trades need them.\nDistortion and accuracy issues are controlled through planned fit-up and weld sequence rather than discovered on the floor.\nOutfitting trades are never blocked by structure that wasn't ready at the correct stage.\nProduction and design trust the structural plan as an accurate build reference.\n\nQualifications\nRequired\nHands-on experience in shipyard structural trades (fitter, welder, structural fabricator) or equivalent planning experience built on that trade background.\nUnderstanding of steel fabrication methods (cutting, forming, rolling, fit-up) and welding sequence.\nStrong understanding of ship construction hierarchy from parts through erected hull, and how breakdown strategy is driven by facility and crane capacity.\nAbility to read structural drawings, 3D models, midship sections, and shell expansions.\nStrong written communication skills to produce clear, unambiguous work instructions.\nPreferred\nExperience in new construction shipbuilding; repair/overhaul experience also considered.\nFamiliarity with structural modeling tools such as ShipConstructor, Rhino, Tribon, or AutoCAD.\nExperience with PLM/ERP systems such as Teamcenter or SAP.\nFamiliarity with ABS, USCG, or NAVSEA requirements as they apply to structural fabrication and welding, including weld procedure qualification and NDT.\nTechnical/trade school, associate's, or bachelor's degree in a relevant field.\n\nPhysical Demands\nProlonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer\n\nOccasional standing and walking within the office\n\nManual dexterity to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and other office equipment\n\nVisual acuity to read screens, documents, and reports\n\nOccasional reaching, bending, or stooping to access file drawers, cabinets, or office supplies\n\nLifting and carrying items up to 20 pounds occasionally (e.g., office supplies, packages)\n\nBenefits\nMedical Insurance: Comprehensive health insurance plans covering a range of services\nSaronic pays 100% of the premium for employees and 80% for dependents\nDental and Vision Insurance: Coverage for routine dental check-ups, orthodontics, and vision care\nSaronic pays 100% of the premium under the basic plan for employees and 80% for dependents\nTime Off: Generous PTO and Holidays\nParental Leave: Paid maternity and paternity leave to support new parents\nCompetitive Salary: Industry-standard salaries with opportunities for performance-based bonuses\nRetirement Plan: 401(k) plan with company match\nStock Options: Equity options to give employees a stake in the company’s success\nLife and Disability Insurance: Basic life insurance and short- and long-term disability coverage\nPet Insurance: Discounted pet insurance options including 24/7 Telehealth helpline\nAdditional Perks: Free lunch benefit and unlimited free drinks and snacks in the office\nSaronic CCPA Notice for Candidates and California Employees\nIf this role is based in the United States, it requires access to export-controlled information or items that require “U.S. Person” status. As defined by U.S. law, individuals who are any one of the following are considered to be a “U.S. Person”: (1) U.S. citizens, (2) legal permanent residents (a.k.a. green card holders), and (3) certain protected classes of asylees and refugees, as defined in 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3).\nSaronic does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, color, religion, age, national origin, marital status, disability, veteran status, genetic information, sexual orientation, gender identity or any other reason prohibited by law in provision of employment opportunities and benefits.
