Medication Safety Specialist

Managing medication incident reporting in the organisation, and improving the reporting and learning.

• Represent at the drug/medication safety committee to review medication incidents and instigate actions to make it safer for patients.
• Act as the designated MSO and Medical Device Safety Officer (MDSO) in line with national directives
• MSO role is to lead in investigating medication safety incidents using root cause analysis (RCA) to identify how and why patient safety incidents happened, identify areas for change and develop recommendations which deliver safer care for our patients.
• Liaising with managers, pharmacists and nursing colleagues to ensure that the organisation infrastructure enables dissemination of learning as well as improvement strategies.
• Produce monthly/quarterly reports that fit into governance structure with an action plan that enables lessons to be shared.
• Be a member of the local and national medication safety networks. Actively network with other NHS Trusts, healthcare organisations, the National Medication Safety Officer network and academic institutions with regard to medication safety issues.
• Developing patient safety training materials and SOPs
• Directs the application of existing principles
• Guides the development of new policies
• Performs a wide variety of interrelated and non-standard assignment
• Significant experience working as a pharmacist in a community or hospital environment
• Experience working within clinical governance and medication safety
• Able to demonstrate the ability to influence decision making with key stakeholders
• Experience of change management
• Takes a self-motivated, energetic, and positive approach to work.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Tenacious with the ability to analyse complex information and situations
• Copes well under pressure and displays personal resilience
• Good IT skills
• Familiar with the National Reporting Learning System (NRLS), NRLS coding and Yellow card reporting scheme
• Never Event Policy and Framework
• Serious incident Framework
• Duty of Candour
• Good keyboard and IT skills including Word and excel.
