This role focuses on making\ncomplex AI behaviour - retrieval, uncertainty, hallucination risk, and human-in-the-loop\ncheckpoints - understandable and trustworthy for government users, while meeting\nGOV.UK Service Standard expectations.\nKey Responsibilities\nUser Research & Discovery\nConduct user research with internal government users and stakeholders to understand\ntasks, pain points, and trust concerns around AI-assisted workflows, feeding findings into\ndesign and product decisions.\nInteraction Design for AI Workflows\n\nDesign end-to-end user journeys for RAG-based question-answering, agentic workflows,\nand human-in-the-loop review steps, ensuring users understand what the AI is doing, where\ninformation comes from, and when human judgement is required.\n\nResponsible AI UX\nTranslate guardrails and human-in-the-loop checkpoints defined by policy/technical leads\ninto clear, usable interface patterns (e.g. confidence indicators, source citations, escalation\nflows) - an execution and craft role, not a policy-setting one.\nPrototyping & Testing\nProduce wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity designs (e.g. in Figma); run usability\ntesting sessions with real users and iterate designs based on findings and evaluation metrics\nfrom the engineering team.\nDesign System Stewardship\nEnsure all designs align with, and where necessary extend, the GOV.UK Design System,\nmaintaining consistency across the platform.\n\nCross-Functional Collaboration\nWork closely with Product, UI Developers, and AI/Backend engineers to ensure designs are\ntechnically feasible and correctly implemented, and to align on evaluation-driven iteration.\nDocumentation & Handover\nContribute UX rationale, research findings, and design decisions to \"Docs-as-Code\" artifacts\nsupporting the OKUA knowledge-transfer framework.\nRequired Skills & Experience\nStrong portfolio demonstrating end-to-end UX design for complex, data-heavy, or AI-\npowered products\nExperience conducting user research (interviews, usability testing, contextual inquiry)\nand synthesising findings into actionable design decisions\nExperience designing for trust, transparency, and explainability in software that\npresents automated or AI-generated outputs\nProficiency with design/prototyping tools (e.g. Figma)\nPractical experience working with or designing for the GOV.UK Design System\nStrong understanding of accessibility and inclusive design principles (WCAG)\nComfortable working within secure, regulated environments and handling sensitive\ndata appropriately\nDesirable Experience\nDirect experience designing UX for LLM/RAG-based products or other AI-assisted\ndecision-making tools\nExperience delivering digital services within UK central government or the wider\npublic sector, including participation in service assessments\nFamiliarity with GOV.UK Service Standard expectations\nExperience designing human-in-the-loop or escalation workflows in regulated\nenvironments\nExposure to open-source design systems or communities\nDiversity and Inclusion\nAt Scrumconnect Consulting, we believe that diversity drives innovation and better outcomes.
