This internship is designed for a student with a strong software background who is interested in applying programming and analytical skills to scientific instrumentation and materials applications.\nYou will develop software and data-analysis methods for real-time monitoring of AFM probe wear during tapping-mode scanning, helping improve measurement reliability and operator decision-making.\nAbout the role - you will:\nWork with AFM scientists, materials specialists, software engineers, and process engineers to translate measurement needs into software requirements and experimental plans.\nIdentify tapping-mode AFM signals that are sensitive to probe sharpness or changes in tip radius, and develop algorithms to detect probe degradation during scanning.\nDevelop a software-based approach to acquire and analyze selected AFM parameters in real time, identify indications of tip wear, and notify the operator when probe replacement may be needed.\nBuild data-processing and visualization methods for AFM topography, instrument signals, probe-condition indicators, and time-series measurements.\nDevelop reliable data pipelines, feature-extraction methods, statistical analyses, and decision thresholds for experimental and time-series data.\nWork hands-on with AFM measurements, reference samples, and controlled experiments to validate software outputs against probe condition and changes in tip radius.\nInvestigate relationships among scan conditions, probe wear, image quality, and measurement stability to improve detection robustness.\nDocument the software, methods, validation results, and recommendations, and present findings to technical stakeholders.\nAbout you:\nYou have a strong interest in software development, data analytics, and solving technical problems with code.\nYou are excited to apply software skills to laboratory instruments, nanoscale measurements, and materials applications such as AFM.\nYou are comfortable learning unfamiliar scientific concepts and working with domain experts to convert physical problems into measurable signals and software solutions.\nYou approach open-ended problems through structured experimentation, careful data analysis, and iterative software development.\nYou take ownership of your work, independently drive progress, and communicate evidence-based conclusions clearly.\nYou enjoy collaborating across software, microscopy, materials science, process engineering, and manufacturing.\nYour experience includes:\nStrong programming and software-development skills using Python, MATLAB, C++, or similar languages.\nExperience with data structures, algorithms, signal processing, data visualization, statistical analysis, machine learning, real-time data acquisition, or application development through coursework, research, internships, or projects.\nAbility to organize, process, visualize, and interpret image, spectral, sensor, or time-series data.\nExperience writing maintainable code and using good development practices such as version control, documentation, testing, and structured debugging.\nInterest in applying software and analytics to scientific instrumentation, laboratory experimentation, materials characterization, or manufacturing technology. Prior materials-science or AFM experience is helpful but not required.\nExperience with AFM, microscopy, instrument control, graphical user interfaces, databases, or scientific computing is preferred but not required.\nCurrent bachelor's or master's student in computer science, software engineering, data science, electrical engineering, computer engineering, applied mathematics, physics, mechanical engineering, materials science, or a related field and must be enrolled in Fall 2027 classes\nLocation:\nOur Normandale campus spans two suburbs, Edina and Bloomington, and serves as the Recording Head development and manufacturing arm of Seagate. Located in the heart of a bustling community, Seagate offers an on-site café, or if you prefer, you can drive to one of many restaurants just minutes away. Need to grab a gift over lunchtime? Shopping is abundant in the area. If working out is your thing, the on-site fully equipped fitness center hosts wellness programs, outdoor activities, tournaments, and group workouts. Looking for something more laid back? Reset in one of our meditation rooms, or simply take a walk around our indoor walking path. On-site cultural festivals, celebrations, and community volunteer opportunities also abound.\nThe estimated base wage range for this position is $27.00-37.00/hr. The individual base wage is based on work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Seagate offers comprehensive benefits to its eligible Interns, including, but not limited to, medical, dental, vision, and participation in the employee stock purchase plan. Seagate also offers Interns 12 paid holidays and a minimum of 48 hours of paid sick leave. The benefits for this position are based on a 24 to 40-hour-per-week schedule for a full calendar year and may differ depending on work location and tenure with the Company.\n#internship\nLocation: Normandale, United States\nTravel: None","description_format":"text","description_chars":5488,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":null,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":{"level":"bachelor","optional":false},"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":["Wellness"],"hiring_locations":[{"name":"United States","iso":"US","kind":"country"}],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":[],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-10-13T08:52:24Z"}],"visa":[],"liveness":{"score":9,"band":"cold","label":"Long shot","p_open":1,"p_active":0.251,"p_room":0.35,"age_days":5,"expected_fill_days":2,"reasons":["conf:6","velocity","win:tail","comp:junior,brand"],"computed_at":"2026-10-19T05:45:15Z"},"pay":{"stated_usd_annual":74000,"is_top_pay":false},"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/seagate-summer-intern-afm-software-and-data-analytics-development","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/seagate-summer-intern-afm-software-and-data-analytics-development.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-19T21:16:58Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"crawler_verified","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":394,"day_limit":null,"remaining_today":null,"minute_limit":300,"resets_at":"2026-10-20T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":1756651},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=1756651"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Fseagate-summer-intern-afm-software-and-data-analytics-development"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Fseagate-summer-intern-afm-software-and-data-analytics-development"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Fseagate-summer-intern-afm-software-and-data-analytics-development"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/seagate-summer-intern-afm-software-and-data-analytics-development\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Fseagate-summer-intern-afm-software-and-data-analytics-development"}]}
