Our team develops state-of-the-art magnetic, optical, thermal and spin-stand characterization techniques to advance recording physics understanding and guide the design of HAMR magnetic recording media for continued growth in data storage capacity. We collaborate closely with sputtering, testing, metrology, equipment, and materials science teams, as well as colleagues across Seagate worldwide. Together, we develop next-generation storage technologies for cloud infrastructure and emerging applications.\nAbout the role - you will:\nThe candidate will work in the Recording Physics and Advanced Development group at the Seagate Recording Media R&D Center to develop and improve magnetic characterization methods, spin-stand recording tests, and data analytics used to study the magnetic, electrical, and thermal properties of advanced media. The role also involves comparing simulation and recording results to better understand the physics of HAMR (Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording) and future recording technologies such as ferroelectric media.\nResponsibilities include:\nDevelop metrology capabilities for characterizing ferroelectric media using electrical and imaging techniques such as Piezoresponse Force Microscopy (PFM), P-E loop measurements, and Raman spectroscopy. \nDevelop characterization techniques for HAMR and next-generation ferroelectric recording media by leveraging existing test methods and creating novel measurement capabilities. \nApply data analytics and AI-based techniques to compare experimental measurements with modeling results and improve understanding of recording physics and media design. \nTranslate characterization insights into innovative designs that improve the magnetic, electrical, and thermal performance of HAMR and ferroelectric media. \nIntegrate hardware and software for testing and data acquisition systems used in recording demonstrations and evaluation of advanced media designs and architectures. \nAbout you:\nProgramming \nData analysis \nExcellent communication skills \nAbility to work independently and collaboratively in a creative environment \nYour experience includes:\nStrong background in physics, particularly magnetism or ferroelectricity, with hands-on experience using high-field magnetic characterization tools (PPMS and MOKE), as well as electrical, optical, and thermal measurement systems.\nFamiliarity with optics, ferroelectric materials, recording physics, and programming languages such as Python, LabVIEW, Visual Basic, C, or related languages is preferred. \nExperience designing and integrating novel instrumentation. \nStrong experience with electrical characterization and PFM imaging of ferroelectric materials. \nDemonstrated ability to develop and integrate new metrology or testing tools for advanced characterization of magnetic or ferroelectric materials. \nStrong background in Magnetism and data analysis \nPh.D. or M.S. in Physics, Applied Physics, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Applied Optics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field preferred. \nLocation:\nOur Gold LEED-certified Fremont product-design campus drives innovation, bringing together a diverse set of engineering, design, operations, support, and administrative teams. The site is equipped with a state-of-the-art clean room and lab space. On-site social activities are popular, including our annual BBQ, ice cream social, and holiday events. Wellness programs, gaming rooms, and the on-site fitness center help round out and balance your Seagate work-life experience, along with opportunities to give back to our local community.\nThe estimated base wage range for this position is $41 - $48/hr. The individual base wage is based on work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Seagate offers comprehensive benefits to its eligible Interns, including, but not limited to, medical, dental, vision, and participation in the employee stock purchase plan. Seagate also offers Interns 12 paid holidays and a minimum of 48 hours of paid sick leave. The benefits for this position are based on a 24 to 40-hour-per-week schedule for a full calendar year and may differ depending on work location and tenure with the Company.\nLocation: Fremont USA Research Center\nTravel: None","description_format":"text","description_chars":4454,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":null,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":{"level":"master","optional":false},"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":["Wellness"],"hiring_locations":[{"name":"United States","iso":"US","kind":"country"}],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":[],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-10-14T23:13:23Z"}],"visa":[],"liveness":{"score":9,"band":"cold","label":"Long shot","p_open":1,"p_active":0.262,"p_room":0.35,"age_days":5,"expected_fill_days":2,"reasons":["conf:2","velocity","win:tail","comp:junior,brand"],"computed_at":"2026-10-20T05:45:00Z"},"pay":{"stated_usd_annual":96000,"is_top_pay":true},"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/seagate-technology-intern-advanced-media-rd-characterization-and-recording-physicist","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/seagate-technology-intern-advanced-media-rd-characterization-and-recording-physicist.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-20T20:27:30Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"crawler_verified","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":23727,"day_limit":null,"remaining_today":null,"minute_limit":300,"resets_at":"2026-10-21T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":1756651},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=1756651"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Fseagate-technology-intern-advanced-media-rd-characterization-and-recording-physicist"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Fseagate-technology-intern-advanced-media-rd-characterization-and-recording-physicist"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Fseagate-technology-intern-advanced-media-rd-characterization-and-recording-physicist"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/seagate-technology-intern-advanced-media-rd-characterization-and-recording-physicist\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Fseagate-technology-intern-advanced-media-rd-characterization-and-recording-physicist"}]}
