From a collaborative culture to teammates who will always be by your side, find a career that will grow with you. Deliver your impact at Secretariat.

Secretariat is a leading global expert services and consulting firm, trusted by premier law firms, corporations, and government agencies to advise on complex economic, financial, regulatory, and strategic issues. Within our Economics practice, PhD economists and experts apply rigorous, independent analysis to high-stakes disputes where clarity, precision, and credibility matter.

For more than four decades, Secretariat has built a reputation for analytical depth, trusted expert testimony, and sophisticated insight across complex litigation and arbitration matters. Our professionals work at the intersection of economic theory, empirical analysis, and real-world decision-making, helping clients understand critical questions with discipline, objectivity, and intellectual rigor.

If you are completing your PhD and considering how to apply your training beyond academia, we would be excited to get to know you. This role offers the opportunity to use the research, data, and problem-solving skills you have developed in graduate school to contribute to meaningful client work from the start. You will work closely with highly regarded experts and supportive case teams, build practical consulting skills, and develop a strong foundation for a career that draws directly on your doctoral training. We welcome candidates from all economics fields and value the curiosity, persistence, and analytical judgment that PhD candidates bring.

At Secretariat, you will join a collegial, high-performing environment where your ideas are valued and your growth is taken seriously. We offer competitive compensation, comprehensive benefits, substantive mentorship, and a flexible work model with opportunities to work from one of our U.S. offices.

As you consider the next step after your PhD, we want you to feel supported, challenged, and excited about the career you can build here. Here is what you can expect from us:

  • Competitive compensation that recognizes the depth, discipline, and value of your PhD training.
  • Comprehensive benefits designed to support your health, well-being, and life outside of work.
  • A flexible work model that gives you space for focused analytical work while helping you stay connected to colleagues, mentors, and case teams.
  • A collaborative, team-based approach where you can learn from experienced economists and experts, contribute your perspective, and see how rigorous analysis comes to life in real client work.
  • A welcoming, collegial culture where your ideas are valued, your questions are encouraged, and your contributions are recognized from the start.
  • Personalized support as you move from doctoral research into consulting, including training, mentorship, peer coaching, frequent feedback, and opportunities to build confidence in your new role.
  • A warm and engaging community with opportunities to build relationships through practice-area gatherings, team dinners, social events, and firmwide celebrations.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • PhD in Economics, Business, Public Policy, or a closely related field, completed or expected by the start date.
  • Strong academic training in microeconomics, econometrics, quantitative methods, applied economics, or related areas.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct rigorous research, work with data, and apply economic reasoning to complex questions.
  • Interest in applying doctoral training to consulting, litigation, regulatory, or other high-stakes business and policy matters.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex ideas clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Intellectual curiosity, sound judgment, attention to detail, and a collaborative approach to solving problems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with economic modeling, empirical research, data analysis, or statistical programming through dissertation work, coursework, research assistantships, internships, or other projects.
  • Familiarity with tools such as Stata, R, Python, MATLAB, SQL, Excel, or other quantitative software.
  • Exposure to antitrust, competition, intellectual property, labor, public policy, regulation, industrial organization, applied microeconomics, or related fields is helpful but not required.
  • Prior consulting, government, legal, policy, or industry experience is a plus, but not required.
