This role focuses on implementing reliable, secure, and performant AI services that enable Generative AI, Retrieval- Augmented Generation (RAG), and agent-based solutions to integrate with business applications and data platforms.\nOperating at the intersection of backend engineering and applied AI, the Backend AI Developer translates approved AI architectures into robust APIs, pipelines, and services, ensuring that AI solutions are production ready, observable, and aligned with enterprise infrastructure standards across AWS and Azure environments.\nESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES\nDesigns and implements backend services and APIs that support Generative AI and LLM-powered applications, including request orchestration, prompt execution, and inference management.\nBuilds and maintains backend components for Retrieval- Augmented Generation (RAG) solutions, including document ingestion pipelines, embedding services, vector index management, retrieval logic, and response assembly.\nImplements backend support for agent-based AI systems, enabling task orchestration, state management, tool execution, and interaction with enterprise systems using platforms such as AWS AgentCore and Azure AI Agent Service.\nDevelops scalable, maintainable backend code primarily in Python, with supporting use of SQL and PySpark, following secure coding and performance best practices.\nIntegrates AI services with enterprise and legacy systems-including SQL Server, on-prem databases, and mainframe-adjacent platforms-using approved, non-invasive integration patterns.\nImplements authentication, authorization, logging, monitoring, and error-handling mechanisms to ensure AI services meet enterprise security, auditability, and reliability requirements.\nSupports deployment, configuration, and operation of AI backend workloads in AWS and Azure, including containerized and managed service-based deployments.\nCollaborates closely with Gen AI Architects, Applied AI Developers, data engineers, and infrastructure teams to ensure backend implementations align with architectural standards and business needs.\nTroubleshoots and resolves backend performance issues related to latency, throughput, cost, and reliability of AI services.\nQUALIFICATIONS\nEducation & Licensing\nBachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or a related quantitative discipline from an accredited college or university required.\nMaster’s degree preferred\nExperience\nFour (4) to six (6) years of experience in backend or platform engineering, with at least two (2) years supporting AI-driven or data-intensive services in a production or enterprise environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.\nHands-on experience developing backend services on AWS and/or Azure, including deployment and operations of cloud-based applications.\nPractical experience supporting LLM-based systems, vector search services (e.g., OpenSearch, Pinecone, Azure AI Search), or event-driven architectures.\nSkills & Knowledge\nStrong backend development skills in Python, with solid working knowledge of SQL, APIs (REST/gRPC), and backend service design\nWorking understanding of LLMs, embeddings, RAG architectures, and agent-based systems sufficient to build and operate backend support services\nExperience with data pipelines, asynchronous processing, and integration with enterprise data platforms\nKnowledge of cloud infrastructure concepts, security patterns, and operational best practices\nAbility to implement backend services in alignment with enterprise architecture, governance, and compliance requirements\nAbility to work collaboratively in a fast-paced Transformation Office or innovation-driven environment\nAbility to meet or exceed Performance Competencies\nWORK ENVIRONMENT\nWhen applicable and appropriate, consideration will be given to reasonable accommodation.\nMental: Clear and conceptual thinking ability; excellent judgment, troubleshooting, problem solving, analysis, and discretion; ability to handle work-related stress; ability to handle multiple priorities simultaneously; and ability to meet deadlines\nPhysical: Computer keyboarding, travel as required\nAuditory/Visual : Hearing, vision and talking\nThe statements contained in this document are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by a colleague assigned to this description.
