Commissioning Engineer - Mechanical

Role Purpose

The Commissioning Engineer - Mechanical will support SGS Malaysia’s expansion into the Building & Infrastructure market, with focus on data centre infrastructure commissioning. The role is responsible for providing independent third-party commissioning witness, verification, commissioning agent and quality assurance support for mechanical systems in data centre projects, ensuring systems are tested, documented and handed over in accordance with project specifications, approved drawings, safety requirements and customer expectations.

• The position is expected to contribute to business growth by strengthening SGS Malaysia’s technical capability in the high-growth data centre and mission-critical facilities market.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Support project delivery and implementation for mechanical commissioning assignments in data centre and building infrastructure projects.
• Conduct third-party commissioning witness and verification activities for mechanical systems, equipment, procedures, checklists and test records.
• Review mechanical commissioning plans, method statements, inspection and test plans, approved drawings, specifications, test scripts and project documentation.
• Witness and verify testing and commissioning activities for mechanical / building services systems such as HVAC, chilled water systems, CRAH / CRAC units, cooling towers, pumps, ventilation, plumbing, fire protection and related controls interfaces.
• Monitor QA/QC and commissioning activities to ensure compliance with approved drawings, project specifications, quality standards, safety requirements and customer acceptance criteria.
• Prepare clear commissioning witness reports, observation records, punch list items, non-conformity findings, recommendations and close-out documentation.
• Coordinate with multidisciplinary project stakeholders to support safe, timely and effective commissioning, troubleshooting, handover and operational readiness.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

• Review commissioning scope, sequence, programme, risk assessments, permits, method statements, test procedures and pre-requisite documentation before site execution.
• Witness, verify and document mechanical pre-functional checks, functional performance testing, integrated systems testing and handover-related commissioning activities.
• Support commissioning stages commonly used in data centre projects, including document review, installation verification, pre-commissioning, functional testing, integrated systems testing and final acceptance support.
• Check that mechanical systems are installed, tested and commissioned in accordance with design intent, approved drawings, specifications, method statements, quality requirements and project standards.
• Identify commissioning issues, defects, deviations, incomplete works, safety concerns and punch list items; track closure and escalate significant risks where required.
• Review test results, commissioning records, approved equipment data, O&M manuals, as-built information and final commissioning documentation for completeness and accuracy.
• Coordinate technical discussions with consultants, contractors, vendors, commissioning agents and client representatives to resolve mechanical commissioning issues.
• Provide practical recommendations to improve commissioning readiness, system performance, reliability, maintainability and operational handover quality.
• Maintain impartiality, confidentiality, professional judgement and good documentation control in all third-party witness and verification activities.
• Support the development of SGS commissioning templates, checklists, procedures, reporting formats and service delivery methodologies for data centre projects.
• Adherence to SGS Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Policy by upholding good safety behaviour and exercising necessary standards and processes when carrying out responsibilities at all times to ensure compliance with the HSE requirements.
• Perform any other responsibilities as assigned by your reporting manager and/or Senior Management.

Qualification

• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
• More than 7 years of engineering-related experience, with minimum 2 years of hands-on data centre commissioning experience.
• Experience in data centre, mission-critical facilities, MEP / building services, construction, commissioning agent, QA/QC or consulting environment is preferred.

Relevant Experience

• Good understanding of mechanical systems in data centres, including HVAC, chilled water, cooling tower, pumps, air distribution, ventilation, plumbing, fire protection and related control interfaces.
• Experience in commissioning witness, inspection, testing, integrated systems testing, defect management, QA/QC documentation, handover and customer acceptance processes.
• Experience working with main contractors, MEP contractors, consultants, commissioning agents, data centre developers or technical service providers will be an advantage.
• Able and willing to travel up to 75% of the time to customer sites and project locations, including Shah Alam, Johor and other data centre project locations where required.
