Job Description:

Organizational Context

This role sits within Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij (NAM), one of the Netherlands' leading energy producers with a long and proud history of powering the country's energy needs. As NAM enters an exciting new phase, the company is transitioning into an independent joint venture and moving away from Shell's operating model. This transformation presents a unique opportunity to help shape the future of a more autonomous organization while continuing to deliver safe, reliable, and responsible energy operations.

Our Agile operating model enables us to create value in a dynamic and resource-constrained environment, empowering teams to make decisions closer to where value is delivered. Guided by our Compass values of Urgency, Simplicity, Unity, Courage, and Humility, we are committed to fostering an inclusive and high-performing workplace where everyone feels valued, takes pride in their contributions, and enjoys working alongside talented colleagues.

What’s the role

As a Pipeline Engineer, you will be a key member of the Infrastructure & Maintenance Engineering Chapter within NAM's Agile organization. Embedded within a multidisciplinary Agile Integrity Squad, you will play a vital role in ensuring the safe, reliable, and cost-effective operation of pipeline systems across NAM's production assets.

In this position, you will apply industry-leading pipeline integrity management practices and inspection technologies to maintain asset integrity, protect NAM's license to operate, and support the company's ambition to be a safe, efficient, and competitive energy operator. The role offers a unique combination of technical expertise, project engineering responsibility, and collaborative problem-solving.

You will work closely with fellow Pipeline Engineers, Operations and Maintenance teams, integrity and engineering specialists, materials and corrosion experts, and external technical service providers. You will also engage with regulators, contractors, and local authorities to ensure pipeline integrity and maintenance activities are delivered safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with applicable standards and regulations.

What you’ll be doing

  • Provide technical leadership and execution oversight for NAM's Pipeline Integrity Management Program across pipeline assets.

  • Lead the integrity assessment process for NAM pipelines and drive continuous improvement of the long-term integrity assessment strategy.

  • Identify, prioritize, and proactively manage pipeline integrity threats and opportunities across relevant Production Units, maintaining close collaboration with key stakeholders.

  • Ensure integrity assessments are planned and executed in a timely manner using appropriate systems and tools, including IMS-PLSS and SAP.

  • Lead annual pipeline integrity assessments and reporting activities, including assessments for non-piggable pipelines and lifetime extension evaluations.

  • Apply Pipeline Standard Workflows to ensure consistent, high-quality execution and "right-first-time" delivery.

  • Continuously update Standard Workflows (SWFs) to reflect emerging assessment technologies, lessons learned, industry best practices, and evolving regulatory requirements.

  • Engage with industry organizations and pipeline inspection vendors to ensure NAM's inspection programs leverage the latest and most effective technologies for identifying and managing integrity threats.

  • Collaborate with industry peers to define, validate, and implement best practices within NAM's integrity management processes.

  • Oversee the performance of strategically sourced pipeline inspection and integrity-related vendor contracts, ensuring delivery against agreed objectives and standards.

  • Ensure the quality, accuracy, and robustness of data analysis and technical deliverables provided by external vendors.

  • Perform data integration, interpret findings, and present actionable insights and recommendations to stakeholders.

  • Consolidate assessment results, inspection data, and stakeholder feedback to develop risk-based reassessment intervals and budget recommendations.

  • Work closely with cross-functional disciplines, including Materials & Corrosion, Process Engineering, Process Chemistry, Inspection, Operations, and Geomatics, to monitor and manage degradation mechanisms and Integrity Operating Window (IOW) parameters.

  • Develop and maintain performance metrics and governance processes to ensure prescribed methodologies effectively manage integrity threats, support Goal Zero, and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and NAM's Integrity Management Program.

  • Serve as NAM's focal point for KLIC notifications (graafmeldingen), coordinating and safeguarding the assessment, mitigation, and response to third-party excavation activities that may impact NAM pipeline assets.

  • Build and maintain network within the Dutch and/or European pipeline industry and leverage technologies, R&D efforts and experience of the community to benefit NAM’s success.

What you bring

  • Significant experience within the pipeline industry, with a strong track record in pipeline integrity management.

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical discipline.

  • Fluency in Dutch and English, both written and verbal.

  • Strong understanding of pipeline operations, integrity assessment methodologies, degradation mechanisms, data analysis, data integration, and repair strategies.

  • Proven experience selecting and applying appropriate in-line inspection (ILI) technologies, with the ability to interpret inspection data and perform Fitness-for-Service (FFS) assessments.

  • Deep expertise in pipeline integrity threat assessment, risk evaluation, and degradation mechanisms.

  • Experience with cathodic protection systems, pipeline coatings, DCVG surveys, leak detection technologies, and internal corrosion management programs.

  • Strong knowledge of Dutch legislation, regulations, industry codes, and international standards applicable to pipeline systems.

  • Active involvement in industry standards committees, professional associations, or research organizations (e.g., NEN, VELIN) is highly valued.

  • Demonstrated success in supporting and delivering projects, modifications, and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently while effectively managing multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.

  • Proven ability to lead, influence, and drive improvement initiatives across multidisciplinary teams, cultures, and geographical locations.

  • Excellent stakeholder management, communication, and influencing skills.

  • Strong track record of delivering results through collaboration, coaching, and influencing others.

  • Demonstrated analytical thinking, problem-solving capability, and sound engineering judgment.

  • Knowledge of Lean and Agile operating principles and their practical application is considered an advantage.

  • Previous experience serving as a Pipeline Engineering Technical Authority is preferred.

  • Proficiency with relevant software and systems, including IMS-PLSS, SAP, Microsoft Excel, Power BI, and MyMaps, as well as a working understanding of vendor-specific inspection data visualization and analysis tools.

Important Note: This role will transition to the independent NAM Joint Venture (IJV). The successful candidate will therefore transfer from Shell employment and become directly employed by NAM. The current target date for the IJV go-live is 1 March 2027.

In addition, NAM's main office will relocate to Hoogezand in January 2027, supported by satellite offices in Anjum, Schoonebeek, Pernis, and Utrecht. The successful candidate will be expected to work from one or more of these locations approximately 2-3 days per week. It is anticipated that at least one day per week will be spent in Hoogezand together with the broader team to support collaboration and alignment.
