Job Description:

What's the role?

The Rotating Equipment Engineer (REE) is part of the Engineering Services. The REE will be responsible for providing technical assurance, reliability support, and project development expertise for rotating equipment across the Sarnia Manufacturing Centre. The role supports operations, maintenance, reliability, production teams, and projects in achieving safe, reliable, and cost-effective operation of rotating assets.

The successful candidate will act as a key technical resource for machinery reliability, equipment troubleshooting, reliability improvement initiatives, capital projects, major outages, management of change activities, and critical spare asset management. The role combines hands-on machinery engineering with long-term reliability improvement and asset stewardship.

Accountabilities

  • Provide engineering support for site rotating equipment, including pumps, compressors, blowers, turbines, gearboxes, seals, bearings, lubrication systems, seal support systems, and associated auxiliaries.
  • Provide technical support for rotating equipment reliability issues, equipment failures, root cause investigations, and urgent troubleshooting activities.
  • Lead and facilitate rotating equipment alignment meetings to prioritize risks, opportunities, and reliability improvement activities.
  • Monitor and analyze equipment reliability and performance data, identify failure trends, and develop improvement plans to increase availability and reduce maintenance costs.
  • Identify, develop, justify, and execute machinery technical opportunities, reliability improvement initiatives, and asset replacement strategies.
  • Collaborate closely with operations, reliability, maintenance, planning, and production teams to plan and execute shutdowns, repairs, upgrades, replacements, and reliability programs.
  • Provide rotating equipment technical expertise and engineering support to capital projects throughout the project lifecycle, including design reviews, equipment selection, commissioning, and startup support.
  • Support annual Non-routine maintenance (NRM), process safety, and outage scope development for rotating equipment assets.
  • Act as the Engineering Services focal point for rotating equipment capital spares, including overhaul planning, vendor coordination, long-term preservation strategies, and repair execution.
  • Provide fit-for-purpose engineering solutions that appropriately balance safety, reliability, operability, risk, and cost.
  • Support the improvement of maintenance strategies, engineering standards, technical procedures, and work practices using failure analysis, equipment performance data, and field experience.
  • Ensure that rotating equipment expertise is incorporated into site threat/opportunity software activities, maintenance strategies, turnaround planning, and operational decision-making.
  • Influence stakeholders through sound technical recommendations, transparent risk assessments, and practical business-focused solutions.
  • Participate in the management of change (MOC) process by conducting technical reviews, supporting implementation activities, and ensuring successful closure of machinery-related modifications.
  • Coordinate OEM and vendor support for troubleshooting, repairs, overhauls, upgrades, shop inspections, and equipment performance issues.
  • Perform technical oversight and shop surveillance activities to ensure repairs and overhauls meet applicable specifications and reliability objectives.
  • Support the adoption of new technologies including online condition monitoring, wireless sensors, predictive analytics, and reliability improvement tools.
  • Promote and implement applicable industry standards, Shell DEPs, best practices, and lessons learned to improve rotating equipment reliability and maintainability.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to developing engineers and machinery specialists.

What you bring

Skills and requirements

  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis.
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related engineering discipline with >10+ years of relevant industry experience.
  • Professional Engineer designation or eligibility for registration in Ontario.
  • Experience supporting rotating equipment in refining, petrochemical, chemical, mining, power generation, or heavy industrial facilities.
  • Working knowledge of pumps, compressors, turbines, seals, bearings, lubrication systems, vibration analysis, and rotating equipment reliability principles.
  • Experience in machinery troubleshooting, reliability engineering, root cause analysis, and equipment failure investigations.
  • Experience supporting capital projects, outages, turnarounds, equipment overhauls, or reliability improvement programs.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills with the ability to work effectively across operations, maintenance, reliability, engineering, and project organizations.

The base salary range for this position is $110,000 - $159,000 per year. Individual pay will be based on various factors, such as relevant work experience, education, certifications, skill level, seniority, and internal equity.
