Shermco Industries is an electrical power systems services company headquartered in Irving, Texas, providing NETA-accredited electrical testing, maintenance, repair, engineering, control systems integration, and motor and generator repair. In business since 1974, it describes itself as the largest NETA-accredited electrical testing organization in North America, serving data centers, utilities, semiconductor, oil and gas, manufacturing and renewables clients across the US and Canada. It hires NETA field service technicians, field service engineers and managers, commissioning supervisors, circuit breaker technicians and project managers.

Overview

Shermco Industries is seeking an experienced NETA Technical Trainer / Instructor based in Dallas, Texas, to deliver classroom instruction, hands-on laboratory exercises, equipment demonstrations, and practical competency assessments for electrical testing and maintenance personnel. The position supports foundational technician development, continuing education, NETA certification preparation, and Shermco technical qualification programs.

Candidates must possess working knowledge of ANSI/NETA ATS and MTS, familiarity with ANSI/NETA ETT, and knowledge of NFPA 70, NFPA 70B, NFPA 70E, and applicable OSHA electrical safety requirements. Hands-on field experience, preferably as a current or former NETA Level 3 or Level 4 Certified Technician, is highly desirable. The position is primarily on-site in Dallas with approximately 20% travel.

Location: Onsite, Irving, Texas

Responsibilities

  • Deliver instructor-led courses on AC/DC theory, electrical power systems, electrical testing, maintenance, inspection, and safe operation of test equipment to learners with varying experience.
  • Conduct guided discussions, hands-on laboratories, technical demonstrations, written assessments, and practical evaluations; provide coaching and remediation.
  • Teach substation and switchgear fundamentals, circuit breakers, power transformers, medium-voltage cables, bus structures, electrical drawings, and one-line diagrams.
  • Instruct on electrical inspection, cleaning, connection torque, insulation resistance, low-resistance/contact-resistance, transformer turns ratio, winding resistance, and applicable diagnostic test methods.
  • Apply ANSI/NETA ATS, MTS, and ETT to training content; explain acceptance versus maintenance testing, test selection, result interpretation, documentation, and NETA certification pathways.
  • Integrate OSHA, NFPA 70E, company electrical safety program, and approved Methods of Procedure and Safe Work Practices into all instruction, emphasizing risk assessments, electrically safe work conditions, LOTO, work-zone control, grounding, discharge, and stop-work criteria.
  • Prepare and inspect training equipment, test sets, cables, leads, accessories, and laboratory setups; supervise controlled and authorized training activities.
  • Support Foundational Field Readiness and Qualification Score Card readiness assessments, including capstone stations for circuit breakers, transformers, switchgear/bus, and medium-voltage cables.
  • Maintain the distinction between classroom practice/readiness assessments and formal task qualification, which requires authorized field evaluation and appropriate documentation.
  • Develop and revise presentations, instructor guides, exams, exercises, and student resources with Operations, EHS, and technical subject matter experts.
  • Maintain attendance, assessment, completion, and training records; use student outcomes and field feedback to improve course quality.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree, or equivalent experience, High school diploma or GED, plus technical education, apprenticeship, military electrical training, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of low and medium voltage electrical testing, inspection, and maintenance practices.
  • Working knowledge of ANSI/NETA ATS and MTS and familiarity with ANSI/NETA ETT.
  • Knowledge of NFPA 70, NFPA 70B, NFPA 70E, and applicable OSHA electrical safety requirements.
  • Ability to interpret electrical prints, one-line diagrams, equipment nameplates, manufacturer instructions, and technical test data.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, present technical topics effectively, mentor developing technicians, and work with learners at different skill levels.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and common digital instructional tools.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current or former NETA Level 3 or Level 4 Certified Technician.
  • Five or more years of hands-on field experience in electrical testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, or maintenance.
  • Experience at a NETA-accredited company or comparable electrical power systems service organization.
  • Previous experience as a technical instructor, field mentor, apprenticeship instructor, or developer of hands-on technical training.
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in electrical technology, electrical engineering technology, or related field.
  • Familiarity with PowerDB or similar test documentation software; IEEE standards and manufacturer testing guidance; and industry-standard electrical test instruments.

Core Competencies and Performance Expectations

  • Strong electrical testing expertise, field judgment, instructional skill, safety leadership, coaching, organization, and continuous improvement.
  • Consistent course delivery, measurable student learning, technically accurate materials, safe laboratory operation, reliable records, and effective support for NETA certification readiness and technician development.

Location, Travel, and Physical Requirements

  • Dallas, Texas-based, full-time position with primary on-site classroom and laboratory responsibilities.
  • Approximately 20% travel to Shermco regional offices, training sites, and company locations; occasional overnight travel may be required.
  • Ability to stand during instruction, set up and demonstrate test instruments within safe handling limits, and wear required PPE in applicable environments.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet company travel requirements.

Role and Qualification Boundary

This role delivers training and helps determine student readiness; completion of a class or simulation does not itself qualify or authorize an employee to perform electrical work. Any formal qualification sign-off must be completed in accordance with Shermco’s approved evaluator and field observation requirements.
