We provide a full suite of services including field services, power systems engineering, control systems integration, breaker and switchgear refurbishment, motor and generator repair.\nPosition Summary:\nThe HV Transformer Technician is responsible for performing field based work (70% travel) on power transformers and related high-voltage equipment. This role includes full transformer dress-out, assembly, testing support, oil processing, vacuum filling, and maintenance activities. The technician ensures all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with industry standards and company procedures.\nResponsibilities\nTransformer Assembly & Dress-Out\nPerform complete dress-out of power transformers, including installation of radiators, bushings, fans, pumps, wiring, conservators, gauges, and auxiliary equipment.\nAssemble and torque all bolted connections per OEM specifications.\nInstall gaskets, seals, and accessory components to ensure leak-free operation.\nExecute mechanical and electrical assembly tasks during transformer installation or refurbishment.\nAssist with removal/dress-down during transformer decommissioning.\nOil Processing & Fluid Management\nOperate transformer oil processing equipment, including vacuum dehydrators, filtration systems, and degasification units.\nPerform vacuum pulls, leak checks, and vacuum hold tests on transformer tanks and components.\nConduct hot oil circulation, fill-ups, and temperature-controlled oil handling.\nTake fluid samples and perform or assist with dielectric, moisture, and DGA testing.\nMaintain oil cleanliness standards (e.g., moisture ppm, particulate levels) according to OEM and industry requirements.\nTesting & Commissioning Support\nSupport field test teams with electrical testing preparation (e.g. Power Factor, IR, TTR, winding resistance, SFRA).\nAssist in monitoring transformer parameters during energization and commissioning.\nUse instrumentation and hand tools to support diagnostic and maintenance tasks.\nSafety & Compliance\nFollow all safety protocols, including lockout/tagout, PPE, and rigging procedures.\nMaintain compliance with OSHA, NFPA 70E, NETA, and company safety standards.\nParticipate in job hazard analyses, tailgate meetings, and safety audits.\nEnsure all documentation, field reports, and work orders are completed accurately.\nEquipment & Tool Management\nMaintain oil rigs, pumps, hoses, gauges, and dress-out tools in proper working condition.\nPerform basic troubleshooting and maintenance on processing and auxiliary equipment.\nAssist with mobilization and demobilization of tools, trailers, and field equipment.\nQualifications\nRequired:\n6+ years of experience working with power transformers or high-voltage electrical equipment\nKnowledge of transformer construction, components, and field service processes\nExperience with oil processing equipment (vacuum rigs, filters, pumps)\nAbility to read and interpret OEM drawings, schematics, and wiring diagrams\nStrong mechanical aptitude and understanding of electrical safety\nValid driver’s license and willingness to travel\nCDL and experience operating forklifts/rigging equipment\nPreferred:\nExperience with transformer testing or utility/substation environments\nNETA, OSHA 30, or transformer OEM training certifications\nPhysical Requirements:\nAbility to lift up to 50 lbs.\nComfortable working outdoors at substations, industrial sites, and power plants\nAbility to climb ladders, work at heights, and stand for extended periods\nWillingness to work overtime, weekends, and out-of-town assignments as required\nCore Competencies:\nStrong attention to detail\nSafety-first mindset\nMechanical and electrical troubleshooting\nEffective communication and teamwork\nProfessionalism with customers and crew members\nEQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER | DRUG-FREE WORKPLACE\nShermco is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
