Siemens is a German technology conglomerate founded in Berlin in 1847 by Werner von Siemens around a telegraph that indicated letters rather than Morse code. After a decade of divestments it now concentrates on industry, infrastructure, transport and healthcare, supplying factory automation and control systems, building and grid technology, trains and signalling, and the Teamcenter and NX design software acquired through a long run of software purchases. The Siemens Xcelerator platform ties hardware to software and digital twins, and the group retains a majority stake in the separately listed medical imaging company Siemens Healthineers.

This is an opportunity to work on significant energy infrastructure projects, applying your technical expertise to deliver reliable, innovative solutions for Australia's power networks.

The role

Reporting to the Solution Engineering Team Leader, you will be responsible for developing detailed engineering designs for substation protection, control, communications, instrumentation and alarm schemes at voltage levels up to and including 500 kV.

Working closely with project management, customers, suppliers and other engineering teams, you will contribute to the successful delivery of projects from design through to testing and commissioning.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Developing protection philosophies, technical specifications, schematics, drawings and other engineering documentation to meet customer and project requirements.
  • Preparing protection study reports and developing protection relay settings in accordance with approved protection studies and applicable network requirements.
  • Configuring and parameterising protection relays, including Siemens SIPROTEC 5 and Reyrolle products, as well as equivalent equipment from other manufacturers.
  • Supporting the project management team in developing engineering deliverables, design plans, project schedules and technical solutions.

You enjoy solving complex technical challenges, developing practical engineering solutions and working collaboratively to deliver high-quality outcomes for critical power infrastructure.

To be successful in this role, you will ideally have:

  • A degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience in the detailed design of substation protection, control, communications, instrumentation and alarm schemes at voltage levels up to and including 500 kV.
  • Strong knowledge of protection principles, protection coordination, fault analysis and protection relay settings.
  • Experience configuring Siemens protection relays, including SIPROTEC 5 and Reyrolle, or equivalent protection relays from other manufacturers.
  • Good knowledge of substation communication protocols and standards, particularly IEC 61850 and DNP3.
  • The ability to develop technical specifications, protection philosophies, protection study reports and other engineering documentation to meet customer and project requirements.
  • Experience with design reviews, technical verification, testing and commissioning of protection systems.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary engineering teams.
