Our autonomous robots and multimodal computer vision platform turn complex, constantly changing stores into accurate, actionable intelligence for leading retailers around the world. Simbe combines robotics, computer vision, machine learning, data infrastructure, and customer-focused product design to help retailers improve shelf availability, price and promo execution, inventory accuracy, and store team productivity.\nSimbe is looking for a Hardware / Mechanical Engineering Intern to join the team designing, testing, and improving the Tally autonomous robot platform.\nAs an intern, you’ll work alongside our Hardware Engineering team and contribute to a meaningful project tied to the team’s active priorities. Your specific project will be selected by your hiring manager closer to your start date so that your work directly supports what the team is building at that time.\nDepending on current priorities, your work may involve areas such as mechanical component design or redesign, DFM/DFA improvements, prototyping, bench testing, reliability improvements, manufacturing support, or early concepts for future generations of the Tally platform.\nThis internship is designed for students who want hands-on experience building physical robotic systems and solving real-world mechanical engineering problems.\nWhy This Internship Is High Impact\nWork on real robots. Contribute to the mechanical systems behind Tally robots operating every day in live retail environments.\n\nLearn production hardware engineering. Gain exposure to design, prototyping, testing, manufacturing, reliability, and field-driven iteration.\n\nContribute to meaningful work. Your project will align with an active team initiative rather than being isolated “intern work.”\n\nOwn a defined project. You’ll be given clear goals and an appropriately scoped problem you can meaningfully contribute to during the internship.\n\nLearn from experienced hardware engineers. You’ll work directly with Simbe engineers and have a dedicated mentor separate from your hiring manager.\n\nSee the full product lifecycle. Gain exposure to how design decisions move from concept and CAD through prototypes, testing, manufacturing, and field deployment.\n\nResponsibilities\nOwn and contribute to a scoped project aligned with the Hardware team’s priorities during your internship.\n\nSupport mechanical design and redesign work for components and assemblies on the Tally robot platform.\n\nCreate and update CAD models, drawings, and related design documentation.\n\nBuild and evaluate prototypes using appropriate fabrication and prototyping methods.\n\nConduct bench testing, collect data, document results, and help identify design improvements.\n\nSupport design-for-manufacture and design-for-assembly efforts based on field, reliability, or manufacturing feedback.\n\nAssist with root-cause analysis of mechanical issues and evaluate potential design changes.\n\nCollaborate with engineers across Hardware, Robot Software, Manufacturing, Operations, and other technical teams.\n\nCommunicate progress, technical decisions, tradeoffs, challenges, and results throughout the internship.\n\nPresent your project, approach, results, and key learnings at the end of the program.\n\nRequired Qualifications\nCurrently pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics, Product Design, or a related technical field.\n\nWe primarily target students in their final year of study and will also consider strong juniors.\n\nExperience with CAD tools such as SolidWorks, Creo, Fusion 360, Onshape, or similar.\n\nUnderstanding of core mechanical design principles, including materials, tolerances, fasteners, fits, and basic manufacturing processes.\n\nHands-on experience building, prototyping, assembling, or testing physical systems.\n\nAbility to interpret engineering drawings and communicate design intent clearly.\n\nStrong technical problem-solving skills and willingness to work through ambiguous or unfamiliar problems.\n\nAbility to work effectively in a hands-on engineering environment.\n\nStrong communication and collaboration skills.\n\nBonus Qualifications\nPersonal robotics, mechanical, mechatronics, or product-design projects outside of coursework.\n\nPrevious hardware, mechanical engineering, robotics, manufacturing, or product development internship experience.\n\nExperience designing components for CNC machining, sheet metal, injection molding, 3D printing, or other manufacturing processes.\n\nFamiliarity with DFM/DFA principles and tolerance analysis.\n\nExperience with mechanical testing, fixture design, reliability testing, or failure analysis.\n\nExperience working with motors, sensors, actuators, electromechanical assemblies, or mobile robots.\n\nFamiliarity with basic electronics, wiring, or hardware/software integration.\n\nExperience with FEA or other mechanical simulation tools.\n\nExperience working on a robotics team, Formula SAE, Baja SAE, research lab, competition team, or similar hands-on engineering organization.\n\nExperience using AI-assisted engineering or design tools and the ability to thoughtfully validate generated output.\n\nInternship Program Structure\nInterns join Simbe as part of a structured cohort and work full time from our Burlingame, California headquarters.\nEach intern will have:\nA defined technical project aligned with current team priorities\n\nA hiring manager responsible for project scope, performance, and feedback\n\nA dedicated mentor separate from the hiring manager\n\nStructured midpoint feedback\n\nRegular opportunities to collaborate with and learn from Simbe engineers\n\nA final project presentation at the end of the internship\n\nWe do not believe in creating busywork for interns. Your project will be selected closer to your start date based on active team priorities so that you can contribute to meaningful work alongside our full-time engineering team.","description_format":"text","description_chars":5920,"description_truncated":false,"requirements":{"experience_years_min":null,"management_years_min":null,"team_size_min":null,"manages_managers":false,"education":{"level":"bachelor","optional":false},"security_clearance":false,"languages":[]},"benefits":[],"hiring_locations":[],"hiring_excludes":[],"relocation_offered":false,"industries":["Retail & Commercial Robotics","Retail & Commerce AI"],"lifecycle":[{"event":"open","at":"2026-10-23T18:41:19Z"}],"visa":[{"country":"US","licensed_sponsor":true,"evidence":"H-1B filings in 12 months: 5 · green card filings: 1","filings_12m":5,"filings_prev_12m":1,"green_card_filings_12m":1,"median_offered_wage_usd":160000,"route":null,"cap_exempt":false,"checked_at":"2026-10-15T11:24:14+00:00","sources":["US Department of Labor: LCA disclosure data (H-1B, H-1B1, E-3)","US Department of Labor: PERM disclosure data (green cards)"],"filings_for_role_12m":0}],"liveness":{"score":86,"band":"hot","label":"Hiring now","p_open":1,"p_active":0.86,"p_room":1,"age_days":12,"expected_fill_days":83,"reasons":["conf:1","win:early","comp:junior"],"computed_at":"2026-10-26T05:57:25Z"},"pay":{"stated_usd_annual":80000,"is_top_pay":true},"html_url":"https://alion.io/job/simbe-robotics-hardware-mechanical-engineering-intern-spring-summer-2027","json_url":"https://alion.io/job/simbe-robotics-hardware-mechanical-engineering-intern-spring-summer-2027.json","meta":{"generated_at":"2026-10-26T12:37:16Z","cache_seconds":300,"methodology":"https://alion.io/methodology","terms":"https://alion.io/terms","contact":"https://alion.io/contact","api":"https://alion.io/developers","about":"Alion is a live layer of people, companies and AI agents: who they are, whether they are real and active right now, what they do and how to work with them, readable by people and by agents and paid per call.","catalog":"https://alion.io/catalog.json","usage":{"tier":"crawler_verified","counted_by":"address","units_charged":1,"used_today":17298,"day_limit":null,"remaining_today":null,"minute_limit":300,"resets_at":"2026-10-27T00:00:00Z"}},"offers":[{"id":"company.slices","title":"One company in depth, by slice","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002,"plus_per_slice":{"credits":0.05,"usd":0.005}},"unit":"per company, plus each slice with data","note":"the employer in depth","call":{"mcp_tool":"get_company","arguments":{"id":8498},"rest":"https://alion.io/mcp/rest/get_company?id=8498"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.slices&for=job%2Fsimbe-robotics-hardware-mechanical-engineering-intern-spring-summer-2027"},{"id":"market.stats","title":"A market slice: pay, demand and time to fill","status":"live","price":{"credits":1,"usd":0.1},"unit":"per slice","note":"pay, demand and time to fill for this role and place","call":{"mcp_tool":"market_stats"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=market.stats&for=job%2Fsimbe-robotics-hardware-mechanical-engineering-intern-spring-summer-2027"},{"id":"job.search","title":"Open jobs by role, technology, place, pay and visa","status":"live","price":{"credits":0.02,"usd":0.002},"unit":"per posting in a list","note":"similar open postings","call":{"mcp_tool":"search_jobs"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=job.search&for=job%2Fsimbe-robotics-hardware-mechanical-engineering-intern-spring-summer-2027"},{"id":"company.verify","title":"Is this company real and active right now","status":"pilot","price":null,"unit":"per company","request":{"url":"https://alion.io/catalog/request","method":"POST","body":"{\"offer\": \"company.verify\", \"for\": \"job/simbe-robotics-hardware-mechanical-engineering-intern-spring-summer-2027\", \"note\": \"what you need it for\"}"},"human":"https://alion.io/catalog?offer=company.verify&for=job%2Fsimbe-robotics-hardware-mechanical-engineering-intern-spring-summer-2027"}]}
