If you enjoy solving complex technical challenges, working across software and cloud environments, and driving innovation through modern technologies, we'd love to hear from you.\n\nPosition Type: Fulltime\nRemote Opportunity: Hybrid\nReport To: Group Software Manager\nLocation: Glasgow/Edinburgh, UK\n\nJob Purpose:\nDesign, develop, secure, test, and operate scalable cloud-based software systems that integrate with IoT and edge devices, ensuring reliable communication, effective data management, resilience in distributed systems, and compliance with defined system requirements.\n\nResponsibilities:\nCloud & IoT Systems\nBuild cloud-based services that integrate with IoT and edge devices\nDesign device-to-cloud communication flows and asynchronous workflows\nBalance edge vs cloud responsibilities for reliability and efficiency\nOperate and monitor systems in production environments\nReason about durability, performance, and scalability\nDatabases & Data Management\nDesign data models and persistence layers\nWork with relational and/or NoSQL databases\nOptimize queries, storage layouts, and access patterns\nConcurrency & Distributed Systems\nDesign and implement concurrent and parallel software\nReason about synchronization, race conditions, deadlocks, and consistency\nBuild distributed components that tolerate partial failure and latency\nApply formal reasoning to state machines and protocol design\nDesign systems to perform task orchestration and prioritization\nNetworking & Communication\nDevelop software that communicates over unreliable or high-latency networks\nDesign and implement robust communication protocols and data pipelines\nWork with network stacks, sockets, and message-based systems\nApply networking fundamentals to system design and troubleshooting\nSystem and Communication Security\nDesign and implement secure communication protocols\nDesign for industry-standard data security (in transit and at rest)\nDesign secure cloud architecture\nTesting and Qualification\nPerform component testing\nPerform system testing\nPerform system qualification against requirements\nProduce test documentation\nRequired Qualifications:\nBachelor’s Degree or Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science, Electronic Engineering or a closely related field\nAWS Certifications such as Developer Associate, Solutions Architect Associate or Solutions Architect Professional.\n\nMinimum years of work experience:\n0-2 years of relevant experience.\n\nRequired Experience:\nStrong foundation in computer science, including:\no Algorithms and data structures\no Automata and formal models of computation\no Computational complexity and trade-offs\no Concurrency and parallelism\no Communication networks\nProficiency designing and implementing architecture on Cloud platforms (e.g. AWS, GCP, Azure)\nProficiency with distributed systems and message-based architecture\nProficiency in IaC technologies (e.g. Terraform, Terragrunt)\nProficiency in at least one systems or backend language (e.g. Go, Rust)\nExperience developing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines (e.g. GitLab / GitHub pipelines)\nFamiliarity with containers and orchestration (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes)\nFamiliarity with writing clear documentation\nSolid understanding of networking fundamentals\nExperience modelling software with automata\nExperience working with databases and persistent storage\nExperience in application development.\nExperience developing software on Linux.\nRecommendations:\nA master’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering, Electronic Engineering, or a related field would be advantageous.\nExperience with multithread and concurrent programming.\nExperience building or operating IoT systems\nExposure to formal specifications, verifications, or protocol design\nDegree in Computer Science or a closely related field.
