Fulltime\nRemote Opportunity: No\nReport To: Group Systems Engineer Manager\nLocation: Somerset West, South Africa\nJob Purpose:\nEngineer and qualify secure, production-ready system software for real-time edge platforms by developing low-level operating system components, device drivers, boot software, concurrent applications and resilient communication solutions that optimise system performance, reliability and connectivity.\nResponsibilities:\nSystem Software Development on an Edge Platform\nDesign and implement system-level software on a powerful edge platform running on a real-time operating system, such as: QNX or VxWorks.\nWork close to the OS: processes, threads, memory, filesystems, networking and security.\nImplement operating system device drivers for on-chip devices as well as proprietary and standard on-board devices.\nDevelop boot software on a development kit and later for proprietary hardware using the same SoC.\nSecure remote update of the operating system and proprietary services.\nDebug and optimize performance, resource usage, and reliability.\nCommunicate with a central cloud-based system.\nBuild tools and services that run reliably in production environments.\n\nConcurrency & Distributed Systems\nDesign and implement concurrent and parallel software.\nReason about synchronization, race conditions, deadlocks, and consistency.\nBuild distributed components that tolerate partial failure, latency and partition.\nApply formal reasoning to state machines and protocol design.\nNetworking & Communication\nDevelop software that communicates over unreliable, high-latency and intermittent networks.\nImplement end-to-end cryptographic communication security.\nDesign and implement robust communication protocols and data pipelines.\nApply networking fundamentals to system design and troubleshooting.\nTesting and Qualification\nPerform component testing\nPerform system testing\nPerform system qualification against requirements\nProduce test documentation\nRequired Qualifications:\nBachelor Honors Degree or Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, or a closely related field\n\nMinimum years of work experience:\n0-2 years of relevant experience.\n\nRequired Experience:\nStrong foundation in computer science, including:\no Algorithms and data structures\no Automata and formal models of computation\no Computational complexity and trade-offs\no Concurrency and parallelism\no Communication networks\no Cryptographic security\nStrong background in system software development, including:\no Real-time operating systems\no Fault-tolerant, unattended systems\no Distributed systems or message-based architectures\no Multithreaded and concurrent programming\no Reactive systems\no Device drivers\no System boot\no Secure remote update\nStrong background in edge platforms.\nStrong background in analysing, profiling and debugging systems.\nProficiency in at least two systems- or backend languages (e.g. C, Rust, Go)\nSolid understanding of networking fundamentals\nSolid understanding of communication security\nExperience modelling software with automata\n\nRecommendations:\nProficiency with systems programming in Rust.\nExperience with QNX or VxWorks.\nExperience with AMD Versal SoCs.\nFamiliarity with containers and orchestration (WASM, Docker, Kubernetes).\nExposure to formal specification, verification, or protocol design\nExperience profiling and debugging production systems\nExperience with C++\nInterest in correctness, safety,
