The successful candidate will identify, prioritise, design, and deliver AI-driven solutions that create measurable value across multiple business units.\nThe role is not limited to the BI team’s existing backlog and is not a purely technical development position. Success will depend equally on strong engineering capability and the ability to work directly with non-technical stakeholders, understand business challenges, and translate those challenges into practical, scalable solutions.\nThe AI Engineer will be expected to proactively identify opportunities, establish trusted relationships across the organisation, and help the business adopt AI responsibly and effectively.\nKey Responsibilities:\nAI Engineering and Technical Delivery\nDesign, build, deploy, and maintain production-ready AI solutions, including:\nLarge language model applications\nRetrieval-augmented generation pipelines\nIntelligent agents and workflow automation\nPredictive and machine learning models\nBuild AI solutions on top of the organisation’s Oracle Analytics Cloud and data warehouse platform.\nExtend existing BI and reporting capabilities through:\nNatural language querying\nAutomated insight generation\nAnomaly and exception detection\nAI-assisted analysis and decision support\nEnsure that AI outputs are grounded in accurate, governed, and trusted business data.\nIntegrate AI solutions into existing data pipelines, BI tools, and operational processes.\nMonitor and maintain deployed solutions to ensure reliability, quality, security, and ongoing business relevance.\nCross-Functional Engagement\nAct as a primary point of contact for AI opportunities and use cases across the business.\nEngage directly with stakeholders in areas such as Planning, Merchandising, Supply Chain, Finance, and other business units.\nFacilitate discovery discussions to understand business problems, current processes, data requirements, and desired outcomes.\nExplain AI capabilities, limitations, risks, and outcomes in clear, non-technical language.\nPartner proactively with business unit leaders to identify quick wins and valuable use cases rather than relying only on incoming requests.\nAI Strategy, Standards, and Governance\nContribute to a practical and proportionate AI governance approach.\nPromote the responsible use of AI and ensure that solutions align with organisational data and technology standards.\nProvide concise updates to BI leadership and executive sponsors.\nContribute to the organisation’s broader AI roadmap by identifying recurring needs, reusable capabilities, and opportunities for scale.\nExperience and Capabilities:\nTechnical Requirements\nThe successful candidate should have:\nOverall: 6-8 years in software or data engineering\nAI/ML specific: 2-4 years with LLMs, agent frameworks \nEnterprise data platforms: 2-3 years, ideally Oracle Analytics Cloud or Oracle DW\nStrong practical experience in AI or machine learning engineering.\nDemonstrated experience working with:\nLarge language models\nRetrieval-augmented generation\nAgent or orchestration frameworks\nAPIs and systems integration\nCloud-based AI tooling\nExperience developing solutions that move beyond proof of concept into reliable business or production use.\nExperience working with enterprise data platforms and data warehouses.\nA strong understanding of data quality, governance, security, testing, and monitoring as they relate to AI solutions.\nBusiness Engagement Requirements\nThe successful candidate should demonstrate:\nThe ability to engage confidently with non-technical stakeholders.\nA structured approach to turning broad business challenges into clear requirements and deliverable solutions.\nStrong communication, facilitation, and presentation skills.\nCross-functional stakeholder work is important\nA proactive and consultative working style.\nA strong focus on adoption and measurable outcomes, not only technical completion.\nAdvantageous Experience:\nThe following would be beneficial:\nRetail industry experience.\nExperience establishing an intake, prioritisation, or governance process for AI initiatives.\nExperience helping an organisation move AI solutions from experimentation into repeatable, governed delivery.\nPersonal Attributes\nThe ideal candidate will be:\nCurious and commercially minded.\nComfortable working with ambiguity.\nPragmatic and delivery focused.\nCollaborative, credible, and confident with stakeholders at different organisational levels.\nComfortable taking ownership of an initiative from discovery through delivery and adoption.\nPlease note: The Cape Union Mart Group is committed to transformation.
