You will be the primary technical owner for commissioning new sites, writing the data decoders that turn raw device payloads into meaningful measurements, and automating the platform administration that keeps our clients' operations running smoothly.\nThis is not a pure junior role. You will be entrusted with live customer systems, and your work directly impacts client billing and operational decisions. We are looking for someone who is meticulous with data, thrives on solving real-world integration puzzles, and is eager to take ownership of a workstream.\nKey Responsibilities\nBench Commissioning & Go-Live:Build, configure, and test edge gateways (Modbus polls, MQTT topics) at our Strand office. Direct field technicians remotely to complete site go-lives.\n\nData Conversion & Decoding:Write JavaScript to decode raw device payloads, applying datasheet specifications. Handle signed values, 32-bit registers, scaling factors, and unit conversions with accuracy.\n\nPlatform Automation:Write Python scripts against the Aptum REST API for bulk operations, health checks, data back-fills, and to automate repetitive administrative tasks.\n\nReporting & Dashboards:Build and maintain client dashboards, scheduled reports, and data exports (CSV, emails).\n\nStandards & Documentation:Enforce a single measurement-naming standard across all clients and document all changes at the point of delivery (register maps, converters, procedures).\n\nDeployment & Server Support:Support Linux servers, manage nginx, TLS certificates, and diagnose service issues from application logs.\n\nMinimum Requirements\nQualifications:No formal qualification is required. A relevant diploma, degree, or bootcamp is welcome, but a portfolio demonstrating capability carries equal weight.\n\nLicense:A valid driver's licence is essential.\n\nRight to Work:Must be legally entitled to work in South Africa.\n\nEssential Technical & Personal Skills:\nPython:Proficient in writing Python 3 unaided for API interaction, JSON/CSV handling, and error management.\n\nJavaScript:Sufficient to write and debug payload decoders (bitwise operations, data type handling).\n\nSystems:Comfortable with Linux administration over SSH, and daily use of Git and GitHub.\n\nData Integrity:A disciplined, systematic approach to handling live production data. Must back up, check, and ask for clarification early when unsure.\n\nCommunication:Clear and effective written English.\n\nTechnical Competencies\nProgramming & Scripting:Experience writing Python scripts against REST APIs (handling auth, pagination, retries, and unexpected responses). Ability to read and extend existing JavaScript code.\n\nData & Integration:Deep understanding of how raw device readings are stored (byte order, signed/unsigned values, scaling, and timestamping).
