Further expansion is planned for 2027 and beyond which means global career opportunities for you, with plenty of potential to explore new markets. \nWhen you join our Team, you will have the opportunity to contribute and make an impact every single day. \nOverview\nThe principal role of the Billing Analyst is to support the monthly invoicing of our retail customers. The position will also be responsible for daily billing processes, verifying customer rates, and assisting with product setup within the billing system. The analyst will play a part in maintaining strong relationships with our valued partners. The Billing Analyst will be one of the primary users of SmartestEnergy’s Billing System and Salesforce CRM.\nThis is a hybrid role, with 2-3 days of in-office work required from either our Syracuse, NY or Houston, TX offices.\nThe anticipated base salary range is $60,000 - $80,000. This position is eligible to participate in our company bonus.\nIn this role, you will be involved with the following:\n· Ensure billing accuracy by performing detailed analysis of billing summaries, verifying account numbers and customer billing terms, and resolving billing rejections.\nMaintain billing curves and components within Billing system\n\nPerform calculations within Billing models and systems to generate accurate customer rates\n\nAssist with setup of complex products within Billing system\n\nGenerate customer invoices and review for accuracy\n\nCoordinate with Sales and Account Management to ensure products are setup correctly\n\nReview exception reports and make corrections as needed\n\nAnalyze billing trends, usage data, rate variances, and invoice exceptions to identify root causes and recommend corrective actions\n\nDevelop and maintain recurring billing reports, dashboards, and key performance indicators to monitor accuracy, timeliness, rejection rates, and outstanding exceptions\n\nPerform data reconciliations across the Billing System, Salesforce CRM, utility data, and customer contracts to validate completeness and consistency\n\nUse historical billing and consumption data to support forecasting, variance analysis, and continuous process improvement\n\nExecute assigned billing cycles and confirm invoice readiness through review of usage, rates, tax status, product configuration, customer billing terms, special instructions, and outstanding pre-bill exceptions.\n\nIdentify, investigate, document, and follow through on unbilled accounts, rejected transactions, disputed invoices, billing adjustments, and cancel-and-rebill activity.\n\nPerform pre-bill and post-bill quality-control reviews, including completeness checks, control totals, variance analysis, duplicate-bill review, and validation of high, negative, zero-usage, or out-of-tolerance invoices.\n\nInvestigate EDI, utility-data, enrollment, usage, and account-status exceptions and coordinate resolution with Market Operations, Customer Care, utilities, and other stakeholders.\n\nReview customer contracts and approved billing instructions to confirm that rates, pass-throughs, resets, billing methods, and invoice presentation are applied correctly.\n\nSupport billing inquiries and disputes by providing clear calculation support, identifying root causes, and coordinating timely corrective action.\n\nParticipate in user acceptance testing, billing-model validation, dashboard validation, process documentation, cross-training, and implementation of billing-system or product changes.\n\nEscalate complex products, unsupported adjustments, material variances, control failures, and recurring defects to senior Billing resources or management.\n\nTo be successful in this role, you are likely to have the following skills/experience:\nMinimum of 1-3 years of Billing and/or Operations experience\n\nBachelors Degree in Finance, Business Administration, Computer Science, Data Analytics or related field or equivalent work exerience\n\nMinimum 1-3 years' experience working in Retail Energy and/or Billing experience preferred\n\nProven experience demonstrating strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.\n\nKnowledge of Utility Billing programs and EDI preferred\n\nUnderstanding of Billing functions and/or Accounts Receivable\n\nProficient in MS Office (especially Excel)\n\nExcellent attention to detail, overall work ethic & commitment to continuous improvement\n\nStrong ability to work collaboratively within and across teams\n\nSolution oriented and committed to success, with a continuous improvement mindset\n\nAbility to work under tight time constraints and pressure\n\nStrong organization and time-management skills with an ability to prioritize tasks effectively and efficiently\n\nAdvanced Excel skills, including pivot tables, lookup functions, data validation, and variance analysis; experience with Power BI, SQL, or similar reporting tools is preferred\n\nAbility to translate complex billing data into clear findings, actionable recommendations, and concise reporting for business stakeholders\n\nExperience defining and monitoring billing performance metrics, investigating anomalies, and documenting data-driven process improvements\n\nWorking knowledge of retail-energy contracts, utility tariffs, billing determinants, interval and non-interval usage, EDI transactions, and market-specific billing requirements\n\nExperience investigating unbilled accounts, invoice exceptions, adjustments, rebills, and customer disputes\n\nAbility to document calculations, decisions, approvals, and correction evidence in an audit-ready manner\n\nAbility to distinguish routine billing exceptions from issues requiring escalation\n\nStrong written and verbal communication skills for explaining billing calculations and complex issues\n\nExperience with VxRetail or a comparable retail-energy billing system\n\nFamiliarity with Salesforce, utility data, customer contracts, reporting tools, and cross-system reconciliation\n\nNote: This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.\nDiversity\nCelebrating our inclusive and diverse culture is core to what we do.
