At Smith+Nephew we design and manufacture technology that takes the limits off living.\nThe Agentic AI Intern will work with the Software Engineering team to develop and prototype next-generation AI solutions and intelligent agents. The intern will gain hands-on experience with Generative AI, Large Language Models (LLMs), agentic workflows, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), and AI-enabled software development. Duties may include designing and developing AI agents, integrating agents with engineering tools and data sources, developing and evaluating RAG-based solutions, testing agent behavior, and contributing to AI-enabled solutions across the software development lifecycle.\nWhat will you be doing?\nWork closely with managers and mentors to complete specifically identified internship projects.\nDesign, develop, and prototype AI agents and agentic workflows for software engineering use cases.\nBuild applications and services using Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs).\nExplore technologies such as RAG, tool/function calling, agent memory, multi-agent workflows, MCP, and human-in-the-loop interactions.\nDevelop integrations between AI agents and engineering systems, APIs, and knowledge sources.\nDevelop automated methods to evaluate the accuracy, reliability, and quality of AI-agent outputs.\nApply good software engineering practices including source control, code reviews, automated testing, documentation, and secure development.\nDocument technical designs, experiments, results, and key learnings.\nPresent project conclusions to senior leadership.\nPlanned Start Date: May 2027\nProgram Length: 12 weeks\nLocation: Andover, MA\nWhat will you need to be successful\nEducation:\nMust be currently matriculated or within a year of matriculation in an accredited university as an undergraduate majoring in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.\nMust be in excellent academic standing, with a 3.0 minimum GPA preferred\nExperience:\nPrevious applicable intern, co-op, part-time, apprenticeship, academic, or personal project experience is preferred.\nExperience programming in Python is preferred.\nAcademic or hands-on project experience with Generative AI, LLMs, AI agents, or machine learning is preferred.\nExposure to technologies such as LangChain, LangGraph, Strands, Amazon Bedrock, RAG, vector databases, or similar AI technologies is a plus.\nExperience developing APIs, cloud applications, or software integrations is a plus.\nCompetencies:\nStrong interest in AI, Generative AI, and autonomous/agentic software systems.\nHigh learning agility with the ability to quickly experiment with and evaluate emerging AI technologies.\nStrong analytical and problem-solving skills.\nAbility to design, implement, test, and document software solutions.\nStrong communication skills including technical writing, listening, and speaking.\nMust be able to communicate effectively with cross-functional teams and drive project completion.\nIndependent thinking and the ability to work within a team is required.\nAbility to manage multiple tasks and adapt to rapidly evolving technologies.\nYou.
