At Smith+Nephew we design and manufacture technology that takes the limits off living.\nThe Mechanical Engineering Intern experience will consist of a robust induction plan followed by a 3-month program in our Research & Development organization within the Sports Medicine Franchise at S+N. The position will be based in either Mansfield or Andover, Massachusetts with some remote work flexibility.\nThe R&D Engineering Intern - Mechanical will support the Sports Medicine Research & Development team. The intern will contribute to one or more hands-on engineering projects based on current business and development needs. The role is designed to provide practical experience with the product development process while working alongside mechanical engineers and cross-functional partners to further develop mechanical engineering skills.\nWhat will you be doing?\nSupport mechanical engineering projects focused on arthroscopic tissue repair under the guidance of experienced engineers, collaborating with technicians, manufacturing teams, and cross-functional partners.\nAssist with concept development and product design through 3D CAD modeling, drafting, rapid prototyping, part fabrication, and prototype assembly; design and refine test fixtures, assembly aids, tooling, and prototype components.\nSupport verification and validation activities, including test setup, bench testing, protocol and report development, data collection, and analysis; communicate findings to the project team.\nCreate and maintain engineering and design control documentation, including user needs, design inputs, risk and usability assessments, and other regulatory requirements, in accordance with Smith+Nephew procedures and the Quality Management System.\nGain exposure to finite element analysis, statistical analysis, biomechanical testing, manufacturing operations, and surgeon and cadaver labs within a fast-paced medical device development environment.\nPresent project outcomes, key results, and lessons learned at the conclusion of the internship.\nPlanned Start Date: May 2027\nProgram Length: 12 weeks\nLocation: Andover & Mansfield, MA\nWhat will you need to be successful?\nEducation:\nCurrently enrolled as an upcoming Junior or Senior in an accredited undergraduate program in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related engineering field. -\nStrong academic standing; acumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher is preferred.\nExperience:\nPrevious internships or Co-ops preferred.\nExperience in the medical device industry or another regulated environment is helpful but not required.\nCompetencies:\nHigh learning agility, curiosity, and enthusiasm for medical device product development.\nStrong written, verbal, and technical communication skills.\nPractical, analytical approach to problem solving with the ability to organize, interpret, and communicate data and results.\nDemonstrated ability to work effectively in cross-functional team environments.\nCoursework, academic projects, internships, co-ops, or hands-on experience related to mechanical design, product development, fabrication, testing, or engineering analysis.\nExperience with 3D CAD software; SolidWorks experience is highly preferred.\nBasic knowledge of fabrication, assembly, and prototyping methods.\nFamiliarity with engineering documentation and process documentation used in product development, fabrication, or assembly.\nExperience collecting measurements, organizing data, and performing basic data analysis; knowledge of statistical methods is preferred.\nAbility to manage assigned tasks, communicate progress, incorporate feedback, and meet agreed-upon deadlines. \nYou.
