Smiths Group is a British engineering company founded in 1851 as a London watchmaker, and it has repeatedly reinvented itself, once supplying instruments for most British cars and aircraft before selling those businesses entirely. Today it operates in four areas: security screening equipment for airports and borders, seals and connectors for extreme industrial environments, non-destructive detection and inspection instruments, and specialist electrical connectors for aerospace and defence. Headquartered in London and listed there, it has been under investor pressure to break itself up on the argument that its divisions have little in common.

Every minute of every day, Smiths Detection’s threat detection and security screening technology helps to protect people and infrastructure, making the world a safer place.

Smiths Detection is a global leader in the development, manufacture and management of security and detection solutions designed to make the world a safer place. Our technology provides threat detection and screening solutions for customers in our key markets: aviation, ports and borders, defense, and urban security.

Our expertise spans 21 global offices, seven manufacturing sites and five R&D centers, with a global network of 3,500 dedicated colleagues contributing towards over 40 years at the frontline of advances in safety and security.

This results in careers built on variety and the opportunity to work on a range of state-of-the-art solutions, where you can develop your knowledge and experience every day.

The Transformation Program Manager leads and coordinates strategic initiatives and cross-functional workstreams across Smiths Detection Inc. (SDI). The role establishes consistent program and project governance, provides transparency into progress and performance, manages risks and interdependencies, and ensures that enterprise initiatives remain aligned with SDI’s strategic and financial priorities.

Working closely with executive sponsors, functional leaders and workstream owners, the position converts strategic objectives into structured execution plans with clearly defined scope, milestones, resources, accountabilities, performance measures and expected business benefits.

The role serves as the central point of coordination for designated SDI programs and other strategic initiatives requiring collaboration across multiple functions. The position may directly manage priority projects while also providing governance, tools, coaching and oversight to functional project and workstream leaders.

Essential functions

  • Establish and maintain an enterprise program management framework for designated SDI strategic initiatives and transformation programs.
  • Translate strategic priorities into integrated program plans, including scope, objectives, milestones, deliverables, resource requirements, dependencies, performance measures and expected business outcomes.
  • Coordinate cross-functional workstreams involving Operations, Programs, Service, Supply Chain, Finance, HR, Sales, Commercial, Engineering, Quality, IT and other applicable functions.
  • Partner with executive sponsors and functional leaders to establish workstream ownership, decision rights, governance forums and escalation protocols.
  • Manage the portfolio of designated enterprise initiatives, including project intake, evaluation, prioritization, sequencing and resource-capacity considerations.
  • Develop and maintain integrated program roadmaps showing major milestones, cross-functional dependencies, critical paths and implementation timing.
  • Provide timely and accurate reporting to the SDI Leadership Team on program status, achievements, risks, issues, dependencies, decisions required and expected business impact.
  • Identify risks, resource constraints and competing priorities that could affect execution; facilitate resolution and escalate material issues when necessary.
  • Facilitate executive steering committee meetings, workstream reviews, planning sessions and decision-making forums.
  • Ensure decisions, action items, owners and due dates are documented, communicated and monitored through completion.
  • Develop standardized program-management tools, templates, reporting practices and governance standards that can be used across SDI.
  • Provide project-management guidance, coaching and support to functional project leaders and workstream owners.
  • Lead or coordinate organizational change-management activities, including stakeholder analysis, change-impact assessments, communications, training readiness and adoption planning.
  • Partner with Finance and business leaders to define expected benefits, establish performance baselines and monitor financial and operational benefits realization.
  • Evaluate program performance against approved business cases, timelines, budgets, resource plans and success measures.
  • Recommend the initiation, reprioritization, acceleration, pause or termination of projects based on strategic alignment, business value, execution risk and organizational capacity.
  • Directly manage selected high-priority projects or workstreams when centralized ownership is required.
  • Promote collaboration, accountability, transparency and disciplined execution across functional and organizational boundaries.

Education Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in business administration, project management, engineering, finance, operations, organizational change or a related discipline required

Years of Experience:

  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in program management, project management, business transformation, strategy execution or a related field.
